  1. This newbie has been having a hell of a time trying to get TMPGEnc to work -- no matter what I do, I get a "read error occurred at address..." (Please see below for pic) error message. (I'm trying to convert a movie in AVI to put on a DVD.) After re-installing, cleaning the registry and doing everything else I can think of, and after reading other posts on this board, I suspect my problem is with my RAM and/or my ASUS A7N8X-X mobo, both of which I recently purchased -- and which run great for everything else.

I'm running WinXP Pro with an Athlon XP2800+ processor.

Short of purchasing new RAM and/or a board, can anyone suggest any other ideas? If not, how about a good software alternative to TMPGEnc? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  4. MainConcept and CCE entry level both cost very little and do s asuperb job of MPEG-2 encoding -- about as good as TMPGenc, but they're both much faster than TMPGenc. You might want to give those a try. You can download demo versions of both MPEG-2 encoding programs with buil-in watermarks so you can check to see if they work on your system.
Oetherwise, try downloading a memory check utility and letting it check your RAM stick. If that passes, gotta be your mobo.

Sounds very similar, so I'd guess it's your RAM. Try a new stick (someone else's / spare?) or take it back and get it exchanged.

    Good luck.

  6. Problem solved? Well, guess what -- JFTHOI, I downloaded a copy of TNPGEnc from another source and installed it. Voila! -- seems to work just fine. Wierd, because .sfv and PAR files reported the original download to be good. Go figure....

Sorry to chase y'all around the bush on this one, but during the painful process I sure learned a lot. Wisdom through suffering?

Many thanks for all the suggestions... I'm gonna try MainConcepts and CCE.

I've read recently a few people extolling the virtues of Canopus ProCoder. Might wanna check that one out too?
