All the flashing is done on PC's because most people own PC's
That does not been you don't need to flash your drive though. Most DVD burners have support for different media imprinted in their firmware, and with every new firmware release more media is supported. Even better: some drives can be upgraded to burn on higher speeds.
Before you purchase a drive, make sure it is MacOS compatible. Go to the support site, and check to see if the firmware can also be updated via the MacOS platform. If you cannot, either don't bother buying that specific drive, or have a PC available to do the firmware update in if you need to do so.
Most manufacturors (sadly) do not program firmware updaters for the MacOS X system..... so if you have a problem with a certain drive which can be solved by a firmware update, you'll have to unplug it from the mac, plug it in a PC and update it on there.
