TMPGEnc is a re-encoder and don't think it will tell you if source is progressive or interlaced material--you must tell it what source material is. DVD2AVI is likely correct. But to confirm, I think you can create a d2v from DVD2AVI and import into TMPGEnc and do a file/preview to examine frame-by-frame...

If not mistaken, create a d2v file in DVD2AVI (with VIDEO set to NONE).. as you pan thru the video frame-by-frame in TMPG preview, you look for the combed effect--bunch of horizontal lines thru the frame, like a comb.. You'll have to randomly check at various points of the entire video, esp. fast motion/high action scenes.. If no combed effect, then it's progressive.
Not sure how to explain but even if there are combed frames, it doesn't necessarily mean that source is interlaced but rather, it is telecined (hard telecine).. to confirm, create another d2v file--but this time with VIDEO set to FORCE FILM--and do another frame scan in TMPG.
