  1. Hello,

I've been searching for quite a long time for a program to merge DivX and/or MPEG files.

I tried JFuse but it's very slow and the merged movie seems to "jump" when it's coming from one file to the other. Also it's not that easy to handle (like Peck's Power Join on Windows side for example).

I tried ffmpegX but you can only select two files and when you have to merge i.e. 20 files it's a little bit "stressy".

I tried this "funny looking green stick on the yellow background"-program (don't know the name) and it was also horrible.

The tools I've searched on DivX Digest are only for Windows OS'

It should be easy to use for selecting alot of files, should be able to handle 500+ MB files and the merged video also has to be of good quality (no frame jumps i.e.).

Does this software exist? Any UNIX based program maybe? Freeware prefered but Shareware is also OK.

Please don't say iMovie. I don't like having a 4 GB file when the original files were only 200 MB large

    Thanks in advance
    Hift

joining divx to divx - no problem
joining mpeg to mpeg - no problem

joining divx to mpeg can cause problems

first off id say test using ffmpegx if you can join a divx to a mpeg. im inclined to say no

so that means you would have to do the following
    1. convert all the divx's to mpeg
    2. merge all the divx's to form a large divx, and then convert it to mpeg

likewise, merge all of the mpeg's together

one thing to consider is are all the files the same resolution? have same audio formats? if not that can cause headache

more info please, specifically on what you want to do in the end. because there may be an easier way! if say you want to make vcd or dvd for example

Just as a side note, you should also consider what it is ultimately you want to do with your mix of DivX and MPEGs. I use to do merging of files a few years back was just disappointed when I'd hear a blip in the audio at the merge point -- it just wasnt professional. After I started using DVD Studio Pro 2 I found you can line up your MPEG files side by side in the same track and DVDSP will merge them for you in the final muxing for a project -- no blips, pauses or other artifacts that are normal for other join processes.

Of course this is only valuable to you if you're making a DVD with DVDSP.

  4. Thanks for your replies. I thought nobody would care.

Sorry, if you got that wrong - my English isn't that good as well.

I don't want to join a DivX file and a MPG file. I want to join several DivX files or some MPGs. I don't want to mix them.

Galactica: No problem? Could you please tell me how you would do it? As I've written I've tried some programs but they aren't very usable.

To AntnyMC: Thanks for your proposal but $500 is a bit too pricy and also too professional. I think of something in the $30 area or (better) freeware.

Thanks anyway to the both of you!

Generally you get better mac replies here in the mac forum
PS. your english is fine, the topic tile can be read both ways
joining divx and mpeg together or joining divx files or mpeg files

    ok back to your questions
    1. for divx ffmpegx is the winner on joining multiple divx files. Unfortunately as you point out you have to do them 2 at a time. Tedious? yes, but its got the best and fastest results.
after join 1 and 2 files, you get a new named .avi, just brose that for top browse option and then the 3rd file for the 2nd option, and so on and so forth until you get it all

    2. mpeg, you can do the same thing... or you can batch them with mpgtxwrap. You can open each file individually and it will load them into a file list, simply then click JOIN and you get a new file called chunk.mpg (unless you tell it to name it something else)
keep in mind they ahve to be same resolution and have same audio source otherwise it will error on merging them

INFO: its a good idea to then take the large joined .avi or .mpeg and demux it into its video and audio components, then remux them back to a new whole file. Strange? some say, but this removes any time code errors due to joining

    best of luck!

  6. Thanks alot! mpgtxwrap is perfect vor mpegs!

ffmpegx isn't very comfortable when you have 20+ files to join
Is there a good Divx/mpeg converter which can handle that many files to convert?

Then it'd be easy to join the files with mpgtxwrap.

Have you tried just using Quicktime Pro to join up all your Divxs? Just use copy + paste. Works great for me

ffmpegx is tedious for 20 divx, but again its doable.
dont know of a batching divx joiner... does anyone?

Does QuickTime Pro support DivX 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and Xvid? If the answer is "yes" then I'll go and buy a license.
