  1. I did a cursory scan of all the sites but there's nothing concrete. Anyone? Anyone?

I'm in the market and I didn't want the EOL blues two weeks after I buy the new one...

I heard that faster G4 chips have just been produced and may find their way into a few computers before the faster G5 chips come out.

As for the G5s all I've heard is "this summer".

There are about half a dozen promotions that end March 27th.

Just curious. From a DVD-video perspective what do you want the next great Mac to do better than what is on the shelf right now? Faster, faster, faster is probably the top of the list. But aside from that, what's next that's worth waiting for? Let's see now, a G5 PowerBook and a .....

  7. Follow up questions:

    1) Do you think the G4s will go away on the next release or just get a G4 speed bump?

I think the current dual G4 is a better value than the low-end (single) G5, but I'd sure like to see dual 1.5s instead of dual 1.25s.

    2) Will the new G5s potentially have two optical bays (like the G4s)?

They are not going to update their PowerMac G4 line. The new G4 chip will be used in PowerBooks and Apple's consumer offerings, if at all. If you want a G5 tower, I'd wait a month, and the current ones will be much cheaper, and there will be faster ones available for the current lineup's prices. It doesn't make sense to buy now unless you make money from your Mac, and a month's worth of increased productivity would easily pay for the upgrade to a new machine.

EXACTLY what I was looking for. I run a retail website (semi-pro) but none of my tools really require a faster Mac (G4 400). But this video stuff is another matter entirely.

    Thank you!

Of course, I only assume they will have new revisions within a month, given the faster chips from IBM and those promotions ending March 27th. Hopefully, you won't be waiting until summer, but I don't think Apple's ever waited a year between PowerMac revisions. As for the dual optical drives, they've been rumored, but of course, only Apple knows for sure. You can always add external FireWire drives...
