Will any recorder be able to burn to verbatims new DVD+R DL discs or will you have to buy a recorder with their blue laser.

Dual layer uses a Red Laser not blue. Same laser for DVD Single layer recording but there needs to be more power available for DL writing. You are thinking of Blu-ray or HD DVD. That is the next Gen DVD technology that will offer a Min of 15GB of storage. DL+9 is 8.5GB.

I believe that I saw somewhere arround that maybe just firmware upgrade will allow burning dual layer DVD. Not sure, but I believe it was Sony who claimed that.

That might be possible with a drive that is at 8X speed or above. The problem is that 4X writers will not have the laser power to write too the second layer. You loose laser power when you go through the layer 0 and the spacer.
