Just bought a LITEON LDW-411S/451S. When trying to burn a DVD it is not recognizing my DVD media. I forget whether it's Generic or BeAll media, but my Sony DRU500A has no problem with it so I don't see why the LITEON would (and I've burned almost 200 DVD's with this Media and my Sony Drive). I checked LITEON's site but couldn't find any driver or firmware updates. Im running XP Pro, using -R media and trying to burn with IMG Tool/Nero if it matters. Thanks for any help.

    Thanks for the reply.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does that firmware update have to do with the drive recognizing blank media?

With each subsequent firmware release, the manufacturer includes the media codes for recognition and writing speed. Most initial firmwares aren't up-to-date, thus, you will have to update it from time to time.

  6. actually firmware upgrade is meant to fix hardware that have problems...for example, my 411s have hard time recognizing other media...this burner loves ritek and verbatim but generic is it's worst enemy....

get a firmware upgrade so it works better on other media....

atleast that's what I did with mine....

No, firmware updates do not adjust region setting. If you want to make your drive region free, you will need to use the LtnRPC software.

If you mean hardware as in media, yes, the firmware will help to alleviate that problem. But physical hardware problems with the drive will not be fixed with a firmware update. So far, I've used CMC (-R), Ritek G04 (-R), Ricoh R01/R02 (+R), Ricoh W11 (+RW), and Pioneer (-RW) on my 411S without any problems as well.

So, which one should I get? I saw all of these but don't know what it means.

    FS02, FS07, FS0B, FS0F, FS0G, FS0H, FS0J

    Thanks.

The last one listed is always the most current. However, that does not mean it's the best, unfortunately. For me, I use FS0F to write -R's & -RW's and FS0H to write +R's & +RW's since it supports bitsetting. This is after reading from various users of both firmware that uses 411S. Typically, you can't flash older firmware back into the drive once the latest is in there. However, you can use FlashFix to circumvent that. Lastly, make sure your burner is on Secondary Master of the IDE bus, since that's what LiteOn recommends. Here is a good guide to all the various LiteOn tools.
