    Hi,

Ive got a Athlon 1400ghz cpu, Abit Kg7, GF4, BT878,SBlive with a 40gb IBM Hdd which i originally brought for my capture drive a while ago but found out that its a abit small for capturing and have just about filled it up so ive got 2 hdd in mind

    Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB-SE, 120 GB, 7,200rpm, 8192K cache, ATA-100, IDE
or the hitachi(formaly known as IBM) Deskstar 180GXP, 120 GB, 7,200rpm, 8192K cache, ATA-133, IDE

I'm leaning towards Hitachi because i have an IBM Deskstar and have no problems so far and have owned for 2 to 3 years now and have not owned a western digital i dont know much about them except they are a bit more expensive..

Also wondering if it would be best to buy an Sata hdd instead and get a pci sata controller card as my mb dont have sata support. As they are probably eventually going to replace ata and if and when i build myself a new and better machine in the future i could put my capture hdd accross.

Another point if i go with sata would that bogg down the pci bus and create dropped frames with my capture card?

If it will bogg down and create dropped frames i would then prefer to go ata to avoid dropped frames

    Thanks in advance

  2. I think your PCI bus will be easily quick enough to capture to a SATA drive running off a controller card. A lot of capture cards run on PCI.

I'd say go for the IBM drive, SATA option. I capture on a Maxtor 120GB 7,200rpm 2MB ATA-133 drive and it's perfect.
