.mkv filetype

allright, my friend downloaded a movie with a .mkv extention, and burned me a copy
"Suicide.Club-DVDRip-HQXviD-ChinaDrum-FREEViDEO.mkv"

so i downloaded and installed the filter to play the video. media player plays it all fine and dandy, but i would like to convert it into an AVI, to be standard with all my other movies. virtualdub can't recognize the file. TPMGEnc opens the file, but when i try to convert it to..say an svcd for example, it crashes and shuts down.

any ideas?

Virtualdub won't do it... Get VirtualDubMod instead. It allows you to open a mkv-file (which is a container format called Matroska), and save it as an avi, just make sure you use "Direct Stream Processing" when saving the file.

vdub mod worked great, now i have an avi with video.
but how do i get the audio?
