  1. i've encoded videos using CBR with max 2520 for the bitrate and it's great during the slower moving scenes with DVD quality, but for fast action sequences i can still see blockiness/pixels. i'm wondering what the chances are of a DVD player not being able to play a non-standard SVCD. for my last encoding job using TMPGEnc, i still had room to spare to fill up the disc (only 90% capacity) and i was already at 2520 and had also set audio to 384 kbits/sec and i was tempted to make the video bitrate larger. for those of you who've done it, is it something that you would recommend to achieve better video quality? will it damage the DVD player? thanks.

    Hi

I have 3 different DVD players and I have not had real problem with higher than spec bit rates for a SVCD (within reason). My brother recently got a new player but his didn't like them being much out of spec. I've lent a copy to several friends to test compatability for me and they all reported that it worked (about 5 players in all).

Don't ask me for quotes but from reading these fora I came to a decision to use variable bit rate and let the max rate run right out to 4000 to get the high action and make the max average 3000. In practice, the max average is usually well in spec but the disk(s) will be absolutely full.

I use DVD2SVCD with Cinema craft 4 pass VBR.

As the disks are for me anyway... I'm happy.

However, I've pretty much stopped making (X)SVCD's in the last few weeks as I've bought a nice new DVD burner.

thanks to members for previous advice
