I've been using:
-- ReplayTV 5040
-- DVArchive to pull shows off the 5040
-- Womble's MPEG-VCR to cut the commercials
-- Nero Vision (incl. w/ Nero Ultra 6.0 suite) to burn
-- Generic "Hi-Value" dvd burner
to make dvds from tv programs I record. It has worked well. I've been recording onto Verbatim brand DVD +R blanks (Sam's special: about $1 each in lots of 50). They read dependably on my 1 year old Sony dvd player, but not my 4 year old Sony dvd player. So this weekend, I bought a brand new Sony NS725P dvd player, in part because it claims compatibility with all DVD -/+R and -/+RW discs. So I was shocked when it rejected as "dirty" or even "no disc" shows I've recorded. In other words, the newest Sony is even pickier than it's older cousin. I've checked, and discs in question are not visibly dirty or smudged or scratched up.
What's the deal? Should I return the player? Should I buy a different brand of discs? I have about 40+ of the Verbatims on hand and hate to toss them. Is there an *objective* best/better/good rating for blanks? Is the failure by the brand new unit a sure sign of trouble ahead?
