  1. Hi there,
Has anyone tried DVD Workshop 2 yet? I tried to import a set of VOB files with IFOs and VIDEO_TS.IFO (They play perfectly in Power DVD player), however, workshop 2 crashed. It seems that workshop 2 does NOT support it, but the spec. of the program says it does support VOB files. Any idea please?

I have it and it works like a dream. DVD Workshop does support vob and is one of the best authoring problems I have ever used. It's even faster than the first version, it also supports dvd-ram.

  3. I have written a very simple tutorial for new users:

    http://www.jonesgroup.net/dvdworkshoptwostepone.htm

Of course, the tutorial doesn't even scratch the surface of the creative options available in the program.

I've been working with the new PLAYLISTS feature and I've been enjoying the compositing features.

    Very pleased so far.

It is a very good program, however the thing I do not like is the fact that it converts 5.1 AC3 into wav when AC3 is used in menus.

Ulead DVD Workshop 2 Now Available

Torrance, CA - January 29, 2004 - Ulead Systems, Inc., a top developer of image, video, and DVD software, is now shipping DVD Workshop 2, the new version of its professional DVD authoring software. DVD Workshop 2 gives creative professionals a way to produce professional DVDs with a minimal learning curve. This DVD authoring software is unique in the professional DVD authoring space for combining a straightforward workflow and built-in design tools with professional DVD authoring features. These include multiple subtitle and audio tracks for alternate music and language, playlists for complex navigation, as well as support for Digital Linear Tape (DLT) for replication and dual layer DVDs (DVD-9) for large projects.

DVD Workshop 2 is available at www.ulead.com for $495. DVD Workshop 2 will also be available through video resellers nationwide by mid-February. For upgrade pricing, a list of video resellers, and other information go to www.ulead.com.

DVD Workshop 2 lets users include alternate music, languages, and commentaries in DVD projects with multiple audio and subtitle tracks. To save disc space and create intricate menu navigation, playlist creation lets users link a sequence of assets-movies, menus, and chapter points?to buttons without duplicating assets. Creative professionals can even replicate DVD titles with Workshop?s support for Digital Linear Tape (DLT), and dual layer DVDs (DVD-9) for replicating discs with double the capacity. DVD Workshop 2 offers copyright protection with support for Macrovision and CSS formats, and control over which geographic region can view DVD titles with region coding.
Specialist (or anyone else who has tried it out), how well does the playlist feature work? It sounds like you can finally make a "Play All" button w/o duplicating assets?

I only have experience with WS1, but from what I've read, version 2 seems to beat out Encore as far as ease of use, features being almost equal. Encore probably wins as far as compatability with Photoshop menus though.

Very simply put, yes you can create a Play All button without any hassle whatsoever. It's as simple as picking an object and select "make this button play all".

This version is more than a face lift, it works so far in my opinion as advertised.

Most low to mid level authoring programs duplicate assets when you make a play all button along with a play only this one clip button.

Say you have two clips. Each one is one gig. You make three buttons: play clip A, play clip B, play all.

The authoring program will write clip A & B to the disc twice: once each and again combined (for the play all button). this means you waste disc space by writing the same clips to the disc twice, using up 4 gigs (A, B, A+B). Essentially you're writing three clips to the disc.

Higher end authoring programs are smarter: they know to direct the DVD player to play the clips (written only once to the disc) either way: play clip A, play clip B, play all, writing only two clips to the disc.

  11. Ulead DVD Workshop 2.0 fully supports AC-3 audio.

I've successfully tested the program on the following three workstations:

    Workstation #1

    Asus A7N266 mainboard
    NVIDIA nForce chipset
    NVIDIA GeForce 2 integrated GPU
    CMI8738/C3DX DirectAudio Device
ADS Pyro IEEE 1394 controller card
    AMD Athlon XP2000+ (1.67ghz)
Windows XP Home Service Pack 1
    1gb PC2100 DDR memory
    Panasonic SW-9571 external DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM
    Panasonic LF-D321 internal DVD-R/DVD-RAM

    Workstation #2

    Asus A7N8X mainboard
    NVIDIA nForce 2 chipset
Asus V9180 video display PCI adapter
    NVIDIA nForce Audio Codec Interface
    Adaptec FireConnect 4300
    AMD Athlon XP2400+ (2.0ghz)
    Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
    1gb PC2100 DDR memory
    Panasonic LF-D311 DVD-R/DVD-RAM drive

    Workstation #3 (mobile)

    Toshiba 1955 S805 (laptop)
    Pentium 4 2.5ghz processor
    512mb memory
    Integrated OHCI compliant IEEE 1394
Windows XP Home Service Pack 1
    Toshiba SD-R6012 DVD-R/DVD-RW drive

Is it possible you have installed any codec packs?

    According to Microsoft:

"Nimo and Tsunami codec packs are untested compilations of various codecs and filters commonly used on the Internet."

"Incompatibilities are known to exist with some of the components in the packs."

"The incompatibilities can cause serious playback issues in Windows Media Player and other multimedia programs, lead to system corruption, and make it difficult for Microsoft Support to diagnose and troubleshoot playback issues."

  12. The trial version doesn't support AC3 (if you are running the trial version, otherwise, like Jerry said, incompatibility somewhere).

  13. For the "Playall" button in "playlist feature", I tested it, it does not duplicate the asset, that is really nice.

well then, that explains it. So much for it saying it was fully functioning demo, obviously they left that part out of it

  17. I'm very pleased with WS2.....much faster and only has crashed twice (that's good news for me since WS1 crashed constantly). Much more control and seems to have been totally rebuilt.

    Hi

I did notice one bug!. Although it burns you DVD compilation, it is unplayable afterwards in my DVD player.

My DVD writer supports bitsetting. The book type that DVDWS generates is DVD+R in my example. I had to burn the files in nero to get a valid DVD from my compilation. Nero set the book type to DVD-ROM.
