DVD Rom will not read DVD

I have chucked some xVid files on a Dvd. The first time I opened the DVD it worked fine, but now every time I put the DVD in the ROM it just makes this funny noise for a while, and then it stops. I double click the ROM and it says to insert a disc, but the disc is in there. Does anyone have any advice as to what is going on?

what happens when you use another dvd like an original movie etc??? or another home made dvd disc???

Good question and I should have put this in the original post. Original DVDs work fine, as do some other DVDs with similar files on them. The dvd is not dirty but I have given it a clean anyway. I just cant understand why it opened the first time and now it doesnt.

The only other bit of info I can give is, this is the first time i was trying to view a xVid file, so I downloaded a codec, then tried to view the file from the dvd with WMP which was now meant to be able to play xVid. An error occurred with WMP and it could not view the xVid properly. But i do not see how this could effect the dvd rom reading that there are files present on the dvd.

have you tried the Disc in another DVD Drive ?

No I dont have another dvd rom to try it on.
