  1. Hi there,

I am having problems editing (on DVD+R discs) with my Philips DVDR70 recorder and making them compatible for playback on another player. I am making the edits fine, and they playback on the DVDR70 fine (with edits intact). However, I don't have a "Make Edits Compatible" selection visible in the disc info screen, and if I just finalise the disc and playback on another player, the edits are ignored.

The manual states that if "Make Edits Compatible" does not appear then your disc is already compatible. Well in my case it is not visible and it is not already compatible.

Does anyone have any pointers as to what the reason for this could be.

    Many thanks

  2. "Make Edits Compatible" is visible only for DVD+RW. At least that is how I remember it.

  4. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I was starting to think I was going mad.

I have just re-read the chapter in the user manual about editing and nowhere does it make it clear that this is the case. The philips manuals in general seem to be very short on information. The manual for my Philips TV is just as poor, there is no info about what the different 100hz digital settings actually do.

    Anyway, thanks once again

    Regards

  5. Well I just quickly checked manual for 75 model and I think it is there...

to select Disc name, Protection, Erase disc (DVD+RW only), Make edits compatible (DVD+RW only), or Finalize disc (DVD+R only). Proceed as follows, depending on which feature you want to adjust.
    or in another part

    Make edits compatible (DVD+RW only)
Finalize Disc (DVD+R only, if not finalized already)

  6. I belive you should be able to edit the DVD+R, but to make it playable in other machines, you will need to finaise it first. After you've finalised it, you won't be able to do any further editing in the recorder.

I guess that when you edit, you're not actually changing any of the recordings, your just marking whether the player will read a chapter or not (i.e. if it's marked as hidden, it wont play, but it is still on the disc). finalising must then update the ifo file the player uses to "understand" how to play the disc. Once finalised, this can't be re-edited on the recorder.

Please let me know if I've guessed wrong!

  7. The menu's which the DVDR70 makes are not very good, I don't like the scoll function used to see more recordings (if you made more than 3).
So I always record on DVD+RW and then copy the files with the windows explorer to my PC. Add nice menu's and backgrounds, edit the recordings to cut any commercials etc. with TMPGENC DVD author and then I burn it all on DVD+R.
Fooling around with the remote is too much fuss for me

  8. The edit on a +R will only be seen by the recorder, other players, at least mine anyway, don't see the edit. Bummer... Maybe someday with new firmware? Or maybe a Philips dvd player?

  9. Well, having now used the DVR75 for a few weeks, using only +RW's, I've had no problem editing out comercials & trimming the start/stop points.

Yes, the menu's not great.....if I want fancy menu's, I rip the recording to my hard drive & edit/author on the PC.

If I just want a simple recording off-air, I edit the recording using FSS & "make edits compatible". I've then had no problems playing the DVD on both a Philips DVD625 & Afreey LD2060 (made by Sampo) players.

Also, if I want to keep the dvd permanently (ie, don't want it leave it on a +RW), I just do a DVD Disc copy using Nero to either a DVD-R or +R.
