also what about modding old dvd writer so that its a slot loading drive instead of tray? is this possible?
thanx

8x has only been out a while.. 16x shouldnt be too far behind.. the thing i'm looking forward to is a 16x dual layer dvd burner..
i'm not even sure slot loading dvd writers are even manufactured.. so modding your tray loading dvd burner to do that seems even further off. -
I don't know the answer to your first question.
It's not really possible to make your tray-loader into a slot-loader. The mechanisms are too different - a slot loader has to detect a disc being pushed in, grab it without damaging the surface and mount it internally. A tray loader is a bit more simple, I would think.
A Pioneer slot-loading DVD-ROM is £25 from www.ebuyer.com - if you want one then I can recommend that drive.

EDIT: Looks like Jeex and myself were answering at the same time, he got in just before me. -
I'm sure some DVD writers will write CD's at 16x, if that's any good...

hehe it was mentiond on cd freaks that mitsubishi will start manufacturing 16X

looks good.
so is dvd +r media ALOT faster than DVD-R? -
Why is it that a higher speed drive requires a higher power of laser? Is it because it spends less time burning each individual "pit" as you get faster, so a more powerful laser is needed to achieve the same effect in less time?

But DVD's could easily be reinforced in the top plastic layer, which CD's could not easily because their plastic is all on the read side.
Real problems are laser power and precision, and the motor. Even with NIB magnets they've got to be approaching limits on what a reasonably sized motor can do with some of these drives.
Reinforce the top and bond the edges well and I'd expect it to survive 32 or 48X DVD speeds ok.. Still it'd be approaching noise and other limit considerations as well, and hopefully density and other factors will increase to do it without such high spin rates anyway..
They need to do a format with double or triple optics. Spiral them in faster but writing 2 or 3 tracks in parallel. It'd cost a bit to develop the parallel optics but once done it'd come down like everything else.. One standard writing track, but then also writing a track on either side of the main track. Still have the same total bit density, but get them on and off the disc a lot faster. And you could still read a normal disc with a drive like this, just use the center channel and spiral in at the slower rate.
