  2. You're in luck - there is a free program - Virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org) that will gladly do this for you. It works with almost any avi codec like (an unbuggy version of) divx and huffyuv.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

  3. yea, i tried VDub, but here's the error it gave me when i tried opening one of the clips:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable.

also, MPEG format won't hurt me either, so encoding in either AVI or MPEG is fine... just anything but DV. thx

  4. You need to 'map' your DV codec.

In the Tools section there is a program called the Panasonic DV Codec. Download and install the program (you right-click on one of the two files once they have been unzipped and select Install) and then VirtualDub should let you handle the file.

You could also try other DV Codecs listed, but the Panasonic is free.

  5. Cool, i installed the codec and all, but it gave me this error:

AVI: Type-1 DV file detected -- VirtualDub cannot extract audio from this type of interleaved stream

basically i got the video to open up but not the audio. Should i try different codecs?

  6. ok, i got all of it to open in VDub, i just downloaded the Ulead DV converter to convert it to "Type-2."

One more thing, if it's not too much to ask. How do i remove interlacing from here, because these clips are interlaced. AVI synth or VDub are probably the easiest for me, but i'm still not exactly sure how to do it. thx

  7. OK, that one I don't know.

  8. The Decomb filter package for AviSynth from Donald Graft is the most popular method of deinterlacing. But because your source is pure interlace, its better to keep it that way. But FieldDeinterlace (decomb) does a really good job.

May I ask you why ? What is the reason behind that ?

    SmartDeinterlace filter for VirtualDub.

Sometimes Telecide filter works better, depending on the structure of your source video.

    Also...
I generally know how to use Avisynth (make scripts, use plugins, etc.), but how do I use Avisynth to open DV (type 2) .AVI files captured from Firewire. Will the "DirectShowSource" command in an Avisynth script work? The goal is to use VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod to edit DV .AVI files.
