yes there are other transcoders but none are free

    clonedvd
    nero recode 2
    dvd2one
    dvd95

shrink is the only free on. I like Clonedvd personally.

  3. djhits, if you don't mind me asking, what don't you like about DVD Shrink?
(v3.1 is coming out in less than a couple of weeks)

I'd like it if Shrink wouldn't pick up the false chapters. Every 5th backup of Main Movie only gives me a duplication of some chapter or 2. I usually just delete them and go. Same sort of problem with multi-angle (Main Movie backup is suddenly 6 GB at max compression because it thinks the movie is 3x as big).

I mean it's pretty dam slick as it is. Maybe some re-menuing? Like when you select only the #2 audio track, so you get no audio by default on some players(ability to tag it as #1 track instead). I mean I fix that after Shrinking, but it's a more advanced fix.

Hmmm, what else? Support for DVDDecryptor IFO mode?

You want to be a god? Add an option to downsize to 1/2 D1, but keep everything else nornal in shrink. I'm thinking of the episodic disks(pesky 16:9 DAR's.....). That would be just killer :P

  5. Gazorgan, is "djhits" another of your usernames? j/k.

"You want to be a god?"
    I wouldn't mind, but I'm not even DVD Shrink's author/developer.

For DVD Shrink feedback and suggestions, I'd suggest you visit:

Have you tried unchecking "View >> Combine shared titles"?

"Add an option to downsize to 1/2 D1.."
I'm affraid these sort of conversions (whether audio, video or both) have already been rejected by dvdshrink (the developer).

Great program, one other fix would be to get rid of the unknown encryption error that halts shrinking of files made by tmpgenc dvd author.

  7. "Cannot Decrypt VOBS" error
This occurs when DVD is opened in file mode, but whichever software ripped the VOBS forgot to remove the copy protection flag. Maybe DVD Shrink should continue, read the data anyway and hope for the best.
This could be "fixed" in the next release.
    No promises though.

Sounds good,i get around that problem by making the files in to an iso image and mount with alcohol 120% and then rip and compress with dvdshrink with no error message. The program that i suspect that would not remove the protection flag would have to be dvd2svcd.

  9. johns0, I don't know if it would be faster, but you can also run the files through v2.3 using "No compression".

I'm just wondering why some people are complaining about dvdshrink not being able to keep Closed Captioning. Arn't the English subtitles just as good, and everymovie I have backedup has had english subtitles.

I don't know, Grant_H, but I do feel like we're now hijacking this thread.

ddlooping, some of the projects i make come to 7 gigs in size,im getting a bit lazy i know so i prefer to use the deep analysis for the compression it offers. Its no problem doing the extra step though, thats just the lazy in me asking for the error fix.

  13. johns0, what I meant was that running the files through v2.3 using "No compression" (so the video stream is left untouched) makes them "readable" by v3.0b5.
I don't know if it would be faster than the method you're using though.

ddlooping, making the files into iso takes about 7 minutes as compared to 15-20 minutes to re-rip.

I prefer Closed captioning to subtitles because it just looks better and is quicker on my TV. Also my Panasonic DVD takes to 2 remote clicks to turn subtitles on and off and just one for captions(using my learning remote). Also with subtitles I find you have to back up a bit further while captions usually will pop up the last captions quicker. You never know what equipment you're going to have in the future so I'd rather be burning them with captions than without. I use them mainly to hear what is inaudible. Anyway that's my complaint and it keeps me from using DVDShrink aside the fact that it's slower than what I'm using.

  17. To clarify what Timster saidVD Closed Captions are not an option when using component cables, only S-Video and composite.Closed Captioning is only used in NTSC land,PAL land uses TeleText.

I still get the cannot decrypt vob error with mpg files that are homemade and cant possibly have any copy protection flags in them.

  19. Hi all.

Timster, DVD Shrink v3.1.5 will not strip Closed Captions, and should be available in a week or so.
