I am using Dazzle DVCII to capture VHS to VCD/DVD. The quality of VCD is fare and DVD is just acceptable. I intend to buy another device to replace Dazzle preferably PCI card and I need Real Time encoding. Can anyone give me suggestions. Do you think ATI AIW can do the job?

review the hardware capture for best rated... you will find the Canopus ADVC-100 has been on top for a long time, and costs $250-300. but you will need a inexpensive firewire card also. Synchronized audio, undocumented mocrovision defeat; s-video, composite video, audio, firewire in and out, pal and ntsc. No software included or drivers needed. canopus also has cards that capture direct to MPG2, but $$$$ -
I am very happy with my Hauppauge PVR-250.
I use a high quality JVC VCR with built in TBC as well as an external TBC/Frame Synchronizer, and I can put 2 hours on one DVD with excellent results. I author with Ulead Movie Factory 2 (which is now bundled with the card) and the whole process goes very fast. -
ATI AIW 9000 pro captures mpeg2 in real time witout any dropped frames and works great for me. Plus you get video out, nice. Check here www.lordsmurf.com for capturing.

Thanks for the info. As I need real time encoding to MPEG1 / 2 I will look into ATI AIW and PVR250.

Before you do any drastic move, try also mainconcept 1.4.1...
It has a built in capture tool, amazing IMHO. Works with all cards and do really good realtime captures to mpeg 2.
Just try it, a demo is avalaible: You gonna be suprised...
