OK heres my problem. I've backed-up Pirates Of The Caribbean using
DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 and burned using Tmpgenc DVD Author's writing
tool. It was burned onto TDK(ricohjpn01) dvd+r. The movie plays fine
on my Sony Dvp-ns325 stand-alone until it reaches the layer change
then there is a noticeable pause. I know it pauses at the layer change
because I played the original and it to pauses at the exact same spot.
By the way I should mention that all my original dvds pause at the layer
change on my Sony.
Now I'm thinking this should not happen because dvd+r discs are single layer and not dual. Never the less it happened. So doing a little experimenting I backed up several more dvds using shrink and even using clonedvd 1.3.11.2 with and without menus preserved using TDk dvd+r and then Fujifilm Dvd+RW to see if it was just this one movie_ It wasn't. After several long hours everyone I tried paused at the layer change, just like the original dvd. Getting desperate I then tried two more dvds burning them this time with Nero _ same result.
After another day of experimenting with various configurations with my media and software, I took some discs over to a friends house and surprise, surprise they played perfect. My friend also backs up movies so i asked him what he uses and he uses DVD2One. So I asked him for a couple of his backups to try on my player and you guessed it _ no pause. So ultimately I ended up buying this Dvd2One and now my backups don't pause. My question is why do DVD Shrink and CloneDVD contain layer change pauses and DVD2One does not? Thanks!

With DVD Shrink 3.1 you go to your preferences, and under the "output files", you check the box that says "Remove Layer Break". This will get rid of the pause on you 4.7GB DVDs.

geforce, DVDSHRINK is still buggy when it comes to removing those layer breaks. Even the latest version has issues. At first I couldn't understand why the layer break was still there even though I had the box checked to remove it within Shrink. But then I noticed some movies have the layer break removed while others don't.
From my experience, DVDSHRINK has these issues on movies that have multiple PGC's in the same VOBs the main movie is in. Pirates of the Caribbean is definitely one of those which this occurs with.
Just like you, I was annoyed with the layer breaks, so i've always used ifoedit after DVDSHRINK to remove them. None of my backups have layerbreaks, because just as you said, it makes no sense to have a layer break pause on a DVDR. Some movies even have 2 or 3 layer breaks. Even though only one of my players shows the pause, it still annoys me.
Maybe this bug will be fixed with the next version of DVD SHRINK. But unfortunately I read that the author is not going to really be putting too much more work into this wonderful program any longer. -
Thanks Guys for the responses!!
I really liked DVD Shrink and CloneDVD, but seeing how they don't work for me I'll just have to stick with DVD2One for now. But I'm not quite ready to totally give up on the other two just yet. Man am I glad dvd+rw
discs were invented for the trial and error people like me
