  1. Hi,

What is best way to convert a divx file to a playable dvd-r disc? I'm hoping there is an easy solution, with one peice of software. I don't want to do several conversions and wait 12 hours. Does this exist yet?

Also, I'm wanting to backup a bunch of old videos to dvd-r. Now, I can record them in mpeg2, but for some reason mpeg2 is real slow/jumpy on my pc. Maybe my mepg2 codec is screwed up or something. Anyway, I want to make my old vcr movies into full playable dvds, and I also want to backup the videos on a dvd as data, so that I can maniuplate them later. I have successfully done this before by recording in as avi then converting to divx, but this was a real pain. Is mpeg2 real slow and jumpy on your pc? Or do I have a codec problem?

    My machine is a P4 1.8ghz

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Wyatt

No. Nero has taken a stab at it, but as there are many flavors of DivX, it's hit and miss.
The procedure is described in several guides under Convert. (AVI to DVD). On my system, 1.5 hrs of AVI takes about 3-4 hrs to encode to DVD VBR mpeg using MainConcept. That's on a PIV 1700 box.
MPEG2 shouldn't be slow and jumpy, provided it's encoded correctly.
Encoding to DivX reduces quality, so for "storage" it's not recommended. The huffyuv codec is better - larger files, but no quality loss.

  3. Hi,

I'm sorry... but I'm still very unclear how to convert a divx to DVD. I have searched the forum, and still see no step by step easy way to do so. Can anyone give me some direction?

    Basically, no.

The problem is this - 99% (maybe all. I don't know the spec 100%) of the DIVX out there has variable bitrate audio (VBR). This is good, because it helps make the files smaller. This is bad, because converting VBR audio AND converting video AND maintaining sync all at the same time is damned near impossible. I tried exactly -once- to do it, and by the time I finished I decided that I could wait the extra two months for the X2 dvd to come out. (hint, hint) It's possible, it's doable, but it's never easy.
