Backing up my (fairly small) DVD collection for going travelling for a few months (fearing theft or loss-in-transit). Normally I use DVDBackup but that didn't work on a couple of discs, so went to OSEx. There is only one disc that won't make it through - stops at about 5.5 GB in 7.8 GB disc. Have tried it 3 times after playing a bit of every title with DVD Player (as previously instructed in this Forum) but still.... Am I hooped for this particular disc or is there anything else I can do?

Does it give an error message or does it just stop and lock up? Maybe there is scratch on the disc? There is a new ripper called Hades. Search this forum for Hades to find the link.

....currently capturing an old video so can't check exactly what the error message says, but yes, there IS an error message (which goes away after a while so I have to watch the OSEx process). BTW, this is a new DVD and has no scratches. I have searched the Forum re hades -- lots of discussion about it but don't see where I can get the app from....also have gone to versiontracker.com and can't find it there either. Where else? Thanks!

Here is Hades: http://homepage.mac.com/wiseweasel/hades032.sit
Also, If you are using Panther, I've read posts from other users in this forum that DVDExtractor for OS 9 works perfectly under Classic in Panther. (It didn't work in Classic under previous versions of OS X). You can get DVDExtractor here: http://www.opuscc.com/download/others.shtml -
...so frustrating...though certainly nothing more than the nut behind the wheel. I now have both Hades and DVDExtractor 0.9b. Not sure now what I did with Hades, but I ended up with a VIDEO_TS folder about 2/3 the size of the DVD from whence it came...i.e. the same results that I got with OSEx and DVDBackup before the error(s). Then I opened DVDExtractor and dragged the DVD icon to the window. Everything seems to be there, but now what do I do to get the decrypted (and region-free) VIDEO_TS folder? Can you give me step by step instructions for either or both of these apps, or can you direct me somewhere where I can get this info? This is one DVD that is too expensive and rare for me to take on the road, so a backup copy is highly desired. Thanks again for the help.

In DVDExtractor use the "Save Image" option from the File menu. The default options/checkboxes on the main screen should already be set to remove the macrovision, region protection, and CSS.

Yes! Now that I have a disc image of the 7.8GB DVD, how do I get it onto a single 4.4GB disc? I have been using DVD2OneX but it needs to see the VIDEO_TS folder to do that. Pardon the basic nature of this question, but... Is it possible to convert the disc image into its component folder/files? When I double-click on the image it gets it ready to record in Toast (but of course, can't because a DVD-R holds much less than the 7.8GB image). What do I do now?

Stupid person here! (and my Apple-tech friend is away for the day, so can't ask him though I might be able to phone the Mac dealer and ask someone there....) How do I mount the disc image into Finder from Toast?

Thanks for the directions...but but but...Now I've gone to Roxio and downloaded Toast 6, and then went through the other steps you mentioned (plus those mandated by my computer) but nothing happens when I click on the Mount button i.e. can't see anything new on the desktop. Stumped...

As per Macnewbie’s instructions (above)..... in DVDExtractor 0.9b I used the "Save Image" option from the File menu thereby creating a file called NAME_OF_MY_DVD•image (Kind: Glmg Size: 7.63 GB). Then AntnyMD said “Use Toast to mount this image into Finder. Open DVD2OneX and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on this mounted image, and crunch away.” When I open DVD2OneX it wants the source folder to be VIDEO_TS but (so far as I can see) such a folder does not exist and the NAME_OF_MY_DVD•image file is greyed out so there is nothing to navigate to.... Hopes this helps you, so you can help me.... Thanks!

Rename the image to NAME_OF_MY_DVD.image to NAME_OF_MY_DVD.toast, and then launch Toast, put it in 'Disc Copy' mode, and choose the 'Image File' option on the left side column, drag your .toast image onto Toast's main window, and hit the 'Mount' button. That should mount the image file as a volume. You can then launch DVD2OneX, and select the VIDEO_TS folder that's inside that mounted image (in the NAME_OF_MY_DVD volume that's now appeared).

Getting closer....I think. But here's a wee problem: the extension of the image file that I have is •image, not .image (are they the same?). In any case, I replaced the •image with .toast (now the Kind is hlmg) but when I dragged the .toast image onto Toast's main window, I got a "Couldn't complete the last command because of a Mac OS Error. Result Code = -39". Okay, smarty-pants, let's see if you can figure this one out.... BTW I really am NOT trying to make things difficult, it just turns out that way. Standing by....

Yeah, I actually had the same problem with Toast 6.03. Fortunately, I still had a copy of 6.0 on my HD, which seems to work perfectly. [Actually, it might be 6.03 that works for this and not 6.0, can't remember. I keep both versions, as some things work in one but not the other.] Else, you could try renaming it to .dmg, and double-clicking on it.

Going around in circles now.... Updated Toast from 6.0.1 to 6.0.3. I renamed file to .dmg but double-clicking gives me a Warning - The following disk images failed to mount Image: NAME_OF_MY_DVD.dmg Reason: no mountable file systems. If I change the Open with part in Get Info to Toast, and then double-click on that .dmg file, I get a "Single" CD with one song (that I've never heard of) that opens up in iTunes. It seems that no matter what I do, it isn't right (or maybe not enough). The Get Info window for the .dmg file shows the Kind as Toast Image File but the icon has "CD" on it and doesn't look like the normal .dmg icon. All-in-all, I'm still stuck with no apparent way out. I certainly don't mind spending the time to get this right, and happening, because (hopefully) it's just this one time and thereafter I'll know what to do and how to do it.

Sorry, I'll make this a bit clearer. Open the .toast with Toast 6.03, or the .dmg with Disk Utility. That's weird the file didn't change icons when you renamed to .dmg, but try mounting the .dmg image manually with Disk Utility. If you have Toast 6.03, then try doing that same process I described with the .toast file.
