  1. Hello, I had a question about home DVD recorders that you guys did an excellent job responding:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=270888&highlight=

lordsmurf recommended the JVC DVD recorder for me and I have purchased it already:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=374578&is=REG

Here is the only problem though, for some odd reason when recording off of my VCR, the color goes in and out, and the majority of the color is out which looks like the video is in black and white. At first I thought it was the VCR's tracking, or the wires, however I have run a bunch of tests using different wires, vcrs and televisions, and I have found that for some reason the JVC DVD recorder makes movies playing from my VCR look like black and white and sometimes flickers to show color but then goes back. What is the problem here and is there a solution? I can only assume that perhaps the signal is too strong and the DVD recorder reduces the signal coming from the VCR or something? Thanks

Sounds like Macrovision to me. Are these commercial movies, or home recorded?

Well, if you started making sense in your postings, maybe it would elicit some responses. For instance, what does a dvd player have to do with your VCR? Do you have your JVC setup properly? Is it set for PAL recording?

  5. Maybe I do make sense but you lack the intelligence to figure out what I am talking about? I already stated in the original post that recording off of my VCR meaning that I am recording movies off of my VCR, the video color is going in and out.

It is still possible that the JVC is more sensitive and you are getting "false Macrovision" errors (https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=246129).

Make sure the tape plays fine on your TV. You might try recording off a different VCR. Otherwise, you may need to use a TBC.

You said you checked your wires but this is a common symptom of a bad S-Video cable. I agree you should connect the same cable to a TV input to verify you have a good signal going into the DVD recorder.

Did you confirm whether the tape has Macrovision? Will your DVD recorder block Macrovision? You can easily test that. Just put in a tape that you know is Macrovision free.

  8. Yeah I tried two different VCRs, my Sony and my dad's RCA but they both have the same result. Ah I just read that topic, great so now I have to spend money on a TBC, when this is the only DVD player to cause this problem.

So you are saying that any tape in any of those VCR players won't record or display through the DVD recorder?

Then wouldn't logic say you have a faulty DVD recorder? You shouldn't require a TBC to record from a VHS tape.

  10. Yeah I called JVC customer support and they said that I should send it to them, however good news is that I tried using the coaxial input instead of rca and svideo and the color quality is displayed correctly now from VCR to DVD.

But the coax will provide the lowest quality due to the added encode - modulate - demodulate - decode steps. Better to get it fixed, then use S-Video first, next composite.
