  1. For a while there it looked like a good DVD authoring software was hard to come by. Now it seems like it's hard to find a good DVD burning software.

There is always some kind of little issue.
    1. It won't recognize your recorder.
    2. Won't burn on + format but will burn on - format and visa versa.
    3. Product burned on DVD+ or - will not work on all your DVD players. Will play on some but not all. Also, there are some media issues.

I know that some DVD authoring programs come with burning support but I've seen issues there as well.

I know this question has been asked many times before. What are your thoughts on this.

I tried several progs till I finally settled on DVDIt PE. It can import menus created in Photoshop, and can encode to Dolby Digital. I create a folder containing the DVD files instead of having the program burn the DVD. I use Nero to burn the actual DVD, as it gives better results. My burner is a Pioneer 105 (I only trust Pioneer for DVD products, PC drives and standalones). It burns to -R, and I've not had any compatibility problems in any of the discs I've burned.

What? There's an excellent (and free) combo: imgtools classic + DVDDecrypter. Not a single coaster yet...

  9. Well, I spent all Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend looking into this issue.
Let me just say that I tried every combination with media, authorer and burning software that I had. This is what worked for me.

First off, The main problem is that I have too much.

5 DVD players including 1 Divx player
    3 burners
    7 (at least) Authoring programs
    7 (at least) Burning programs
10 (at least) Different brands of media

Without getting into all the details my pick for authoring is

    Tmpgenc DVD author
    DVD Architect
    DVD Lab

My pick for Burning software is

IMGTools with DVD Decrypter (Thank you mats.hogberg) I would've never known to try this.
Nero for audio and data (not DVD's)

Exactly. This is something Nero (regardless of version) is good at.
