my tv is not high definition, so my backup DVDs don't have very noticeble compression, except for longer movies. I plan to get a really good tv in the future, so will it be really noticeble? For example, will a 7 GB movie that has been compressed to fit on a dvd-r look worse on a HDTV/plasma then it does on a regular tv?

There is a very large improvement viewing a DVD movie on a HDTV with a progressive DVD player IMO. I view my movies on a 43 inch Samsung DLP HDTV using a Bravo D1 DVI enabled DVD player at 720p. Now I'm so spoiled I can't watch a regular TV at all.

I've done some compression of long movies like the Godfather & Casino. On my 43" WS HDTV the picture looks slightly better than the old first generation DVD's. You know the ones... the first few DVD's they released when this whole DVD thing started. Movies like Red Heat.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side. -
Using DVD shrink at 70% compression, movies still look good on my Sony 50" LCD rear projection TV using progressive scan 480P.
