I recently purchased the Lite-On LVD-2002 hoping to play my divx files on my TV. The problem is the play doesn't play my files correctly! I took a Silence of the Lambs and converted small clips from it to test what resolution would be best for the player. However I can't get it to play correctly on both my computer and my settop player.
I tried converting it from DVD to divx without touching anything except the compressions format. But the dvd resolution is 720x480, which is NOT a 4:3 resolution and as a result will play the movie slightly squished(the people look fatter and shorter than they are supposed to be). The software player or the dvd player is supposed to correct that so that the movie will be view correctly. If I convert it with this resolution to divx, the file will play correctly on my player but not on my computer. I have found various guides to covert the dvd file to divx so that it will play correctly on my computer(the images look correct and not squished), but if I do it that way, it will play correctly on my computer but not on my player. The people will look taller and skinner than they are supposed to be.
So far, this divx function has been a MAJOR disappointment.

Does anybody have any other methods to get divx files to play correctly on both set top and computer? I wish this was as simple as converting for VCD or DVD. -
title your question correctly and people who know about aspect ratios may be able to help

Other people that have divx dvd players don't seem to have the problem I have. I want to know what I'm doing wrong.

I can think of several problems so far.
It sounds like your new player is not letterboxing the non-4:3 video files like it's supposed to. A non-4:3 movie is supposed to have black bars on top and bottom when played on a standard 4:3 TV, I don't think this is happening with this player. I think it's enlarging the video to fit full screen vertical, while maintaining its full screen side to side. (Out of ratio) Or you're messing up the files by choosing the wrong aspect ratio when encoding. Either way...... Same outcome.
You can encode and force letterboxing. You'll have those nasty black bars on your disk taking up space, but it should display properly on your 4:3 TV and your computer.
This is not what most people do. We usually remove the black bars.
You may of already fixed it on your TV by what you said above. On your computer a different player may fix that problem also. I like and use PowerDVD and DivX Player. Windows Media Player has many problems, I don't use it much anymore.
And like suggested above. Use DR DIVX. It's a great program and this problem should go away.
Good luck. -
After converting the video to divx/xvid, I crop out the black bars usually. The player does letterbox it, but not correctly. The black bars on the top and bottom aren't thick enough, so the image looks likes its stretched. This happens even with Dr.Divx which is supposed to set the ratio for both the computer and the set top player.
The stretched images happen with my 640x480 files also. I have some anime that is encoded with xvid 640x480, which is 4:3, and when I put it in the player, the picture is squished on the sides and stretched from the top and bottom. I have to convert my files with a slightly squished from the top and bottom for it to look correct.
I have seen many praises about these players and I really want to know what Im doing wrong. Or does this happen with all players and people just accept it? -
Strange that 640x480 files won't play correctly. Do you have your LITEON LVD-2002 connected to a 16x9 TV or a 4:3 TV and most importantly do you have the video output set up correctly i.e., 16x9, 4:3 pan & scan or 4:3 letterboxed.

I ran the LiteOn through my capture card and here are some still captures that can clearly show my problem.
The first picture is how it is shown when played on the the LiteOn player. Second picture is how it is displayed when played with PowerDVD and is the correct image. I believe the Anime clips will give a better example of what I am having problems with.
Clip encoded with Dr.Divx in 16:9 aspect ratio with black bars cropped
AviCodec Informatio Video : 122 Mb, 1059 Kbps, 23.976 fps, res. 720*304 (2.21:1), DX50 = DivXNetworks Divx v5, Unsupported
Notice how the 20th Century sign looks taller than its supposed to be.
Notice how the Sean Connery's head is skinnier than its supposed to be.
Anime Clip
AviCodec Information Video : 152 Mb, 925 Kbps, 23.976 fps, res. 640*480 (4:3), DX50 = DivXNetworks Divx v5, Unsupported
Black bars on the sides aren't supposed to be there and the character is skinnier than supposed to be.
Again black bars and name is skinnier.
Here are my player settings:
Does anybody else have this problem or do I have a defective player? -
First thing is, have you contacted Lite-on or the Divx.com forum. In my opinion that is where you should go first with this issue.
The other place I believe you should contact is the Dr. Divx forum and/or support. The Divsx forum is very powerful with authors of the software being active in it.
I personally use Dr. Divx and have a Lite-on LVD-2001 amd love it. There are some quirks on the Dr Divx side by the way which when known about, might help you.
There are so many factors, and I have some ideas, but I will not share them with you, because I think you will get a quicker answer going to the support of the specific vendors of the products that you are using.
By the way, is the original source 16 x 9 ? -
The movie I ripped this from a dvd and the original source's ratio is 2.35:1. The anime's source is 4:3.
BTW, just out of curiosity, how do you encode your videos jolo? -
I just got one myself, and have the exact same problem. Going to the Lite-on sight they'll tell you, in bad english, that they are working on the aspect ratio problems...
However, they did provide a fix they just don't explain it in the manual. The zoom button isn't actually a zoom button so much as an aspect ratio adjuster. Much like the computer monitor buttons which shrink and enlarge the text. Press zoom on the remote then the left and right arrows shrink and expand the sides, and the up and down arrows shrink and expand the top and bottom. A bit of a pain that it doesn't work right off the bat, but this does fix the problem. -
Yea, I have the same problem with divx and xvid movies playing at the wrong aspect ratio. As mentioned above, the 'zoom' feature will solve the problem for the most part. The deal with that though is you have to adjust every time you turn the player on because it doesn't save your setting, which isn't a big deal.
Also here's a tip to allow for better adjustment. If you press the enter key while in zoom mode, the player will go into 'Scroll' mode which lets you move the entire picture (aspect ratio won't change) from vertically or horizontally. This is helpful if your TV skews images to one side or another, mine does slightly.
BTW, this is my first post on DVDRhelp, w00t!
