Hello, I recently heard that a dvd-r of larger than 4.7 gb is available. Is this true and what brand would it be (and size)?

Not yet it's not, dual layer burners and media are on the horizon, but no definite date has been set TTBOMK, only general hints.
They are being touted as DVD-9, but if they keep to the specs then the second layer has to have less data on it than the first, so I would expect to see figures more in the 7.8 - 8.2Gb mark, personally.
In short, don't hold your breath.
Oh yes, you can get double sided DVD-R's, but they are rare, expensive, and most people complain if they get a flipper these days...
