  1. Just thought that it might be interesting.

I don't have any right now, but I owned Philips DVDR-75/17 for a couple of weeks. Why ? Becouse it used DVD+RW discs and not DVD-RAM and was cheaper than Sony RDR-GX7 (only other recorder that they had in store).

Sharp (not on the list, so I will consider it a Pioneer). Originally bought it cuz it was the cheapest at the time, uses -RW instead of -RAM, and has bi-directional firewire. Unfortunately the firewire OUT is lousy - very grainy video (IN is excellent).

  3. piano632, I added Sharp into list so you can vote now

Also added Other for rest of the recorders.

You left off one of the best, AOPEN DRW4410 (Ricoh mechanism), which has bitsetting (bookchange). This drive burns disks that read on my old player that my NEC ND1100a couldn't make a playable disk for.

  5. GKar: The AOPEN DRW4410 is a PC burner. I believe we're talking about standalone DVD recorders here.

donpedro: Maybe you should remove the "burner" from your title.

  6. Changed. Sorry for confusion.

  7. I own 2 panasonics and 2 magnavox's, bought the magnavox's recently cause I can take the +RW's and edited them back on my computer then burn my finished product without any loss in quality.

  8. got the panny e-30. Very happy with it.

  9. Panasonic E50 because it is inexpensive, reliable and has features like timeslip and TBC and can record in RGB (UK version). I also believe that caddied dvd-ram is the most durable and reliable RW format, and although the discs are comparitively expensive, I know they will last for years and never get dirty or scratched in a domestic environment.

  10. Philips DVDR70 (standalone) , it was cheap (381 euro's/312 US Dollars), burns +RW
    (my Lite-On 401S also burns only +RW).

I'm very satisfied with it! Easy recording and good quality picture!
I've already transferred a few old VHS tapes to DVD, I record them on
DVD+RW, then simply copy them to my PC with windows explorer and then edit them and ad menu's using TMPGENC DVD author. Then I
burn them on DVD+R with Nero 6 , works like a charm!
After this I dump my old huge sized tapes in the garbagecan! :P

  13. I have the Sony, and I'm very happy except for one thing. I'd like to use the VR format for advanced editing, but the finalized DVD-RW disks won't show up on my Mac OS 9.2.2 desktop so I can create disk images. I've purchased ReadDVD! software to correct the problem, but it hasn't worked so far.

Sure would like to hear from anyone that has a fix.

  14. Panasonic DMR-E100H.
I am thinking about buying a second one. With no doubt, it will be Panasonic, but the next model. Why? Because of DVD-RAM capability. It is absobloodylutely versatile format. As to compatibility issue, I believe, it is just a matter of time, because the advantages of DVD-RAM format are so obvious without any further explanations!

  15. Do you know when they plan to come with new model ?

  16. Nope.
I believe nobody knows. Matsushita never reveals its roadmap. So, by the end of 2004, I guess.
I would keep an eye on Pioneer: the top models from their DVR-710H/ DVR-610H/ DVR-515H/ DVR-510H range look quite promising, while we have just DVR-510H/5100 at the moment.

  17. sony, purely for image quality (#1 criteria) which I think is excellent.

that said, the format versatility is good (+RW instead of RAM though).

  18. Does anybody here know of a way to mount DVD-RW disks created in the Sony VR format using Mac OS 9.2.2? I love my Sony recorder, too, but I'd really like to be able to use advanced editing to full advantage.

  23. I wonder how low these DVD Recorders can go with price. Lowest that I saw so far was $199 for LiteOn which seamed more like a mistake from Best Buy.

  24. I have the toshiba rd-x2 and several panasonic dvd-recorders with which I am happy.

  25. Your poll only allows one vote; some people have recorders from two or more different manufactuers. I liked the time slip and chasing play features of the Panasonic dmr-e20. Its nice to be able to watch a recording while another show is recording. I feel that the discs in the cassettes are the most durable. I bought the hs2 and the toshiba for the hard drive capacity, the carry over of the other features of the e20 and the ability to watch a commercial dvd while still recording a show.

If anyone is interested, there is a review of DVD & HD recorders in January's What Hi-Fi? Sound & Vision. Unfortunately it doesn't appear on the web, but I can scan some pages in if needed (would this break copyright?).

Panasonic DMRE-80H. Hard drive is a must for editing those home videos, and it gives a professional appearance to the finished DVD with titles, chapters, etc. Once you get the hang of using this deck, it is superb!

Was going to buy the Pioneer 5100 today - all £650 of it! Then I was struck by a moment of clarity - the burner inside is worth less than £100 and the 80Gb HD is probably worth about £50. What the hell am I paying the extra £500 for???

So, I went out and bought a new HD, installed it and sorted out my IUVCR software to to timed recordings. It might not be the one stop solution that a desktop recorder is, but I have far more control over it for a lot less £.

Still want one though - I'll just wait for the price to come down.
    Regards,

    Rob

  29. My lovely wife gave me the Panny DMR-E80 for Christmas, and it's definitely the best Christmas gift I've ever received. The features are mind-bogglingly plentiful and the recording quality at XP and SP are fabulous. LP (4hour) is fine for most everything episodic, too.

    I'm VERY happy!
