I have a pioneer 106 and tried to burn memorex dvd+r and dvd+rw and neither worked. Got incorrect function all the time. Tried some khypermedia and they worked fine and in my sony np 300. What should i try next? take another chance with khypermedia or something else?

Try upgrading the firmware for your 106. It may not recognize the speed grade of the media.

Same thing here with printable Memorex discs. They burn okay (most of the time) but only 25% can be played in my standalone Pioneer player
and i have the newest firmware

You are buying junky dvd discs. Buy some quality ritek, tdk or taiyo yudens. not all blank dvd's are made equal.

I don't think Memorex are junk, I have used about 200 and they are all fine. It gets kind of old to always blame the media, you don't see these problems with cdrw's using cheap media. I think dvd writing is still not mature enough and problems come from both hardware, media and software. I think this year we will see much better results as media processes and drive firmwares come of age.

My Sony standalone is a pig with media types, both DVD-R and CD-R - but according to the specs it plays what it should, ie pressed discs.
Saying that, my Ronin 215 has got a very relaxed specification and plays pretty much anything you can put on a disc, and that isn't fussy about media at all.
The irony is that it is the Sony that is more compliant, but that doesn't make it compatible with all the media I can throw at it.
Media should appear to the playback device as very similar if not identical to pressed media. If it does not, you will have problems. And you can't blame the hardware for that.
Don't forget naff authoring plays a part too - I've made the odd coaster through simple authoring problems before now.
