TMPGEn no better than DVD WS ???

I'm new to TMPGEn+ and this conversion stuff but after a few tests converting edited AVI files to MPEG-2 I found no difference in quality between using DVD Workshop or TMPGEn+ for the conversion when played on a TV. Have I missed something about why TMPGEn+ is supposed to be so good , or does DVD WS conversion come with recommendation ? Thanks.

WHen you're converting from an avi to mpeg2, you're trying to take a highly compressed format into a less compressed format. It'll probably be hard to notice a difference if they're both able to pretty much max out the bitrate to fit on a dvd with a lower-quality source (guessing 700mb avi)
