  1. Is there any software that needs to be installed in order for a dvd rom drive to recognize a dvd? I have a dvd rom that will read any data cd but it gives the "drive not accessible" error when you put a dvd in. I've installed win dvd but am not sure if I need to install anything else or not.

  2. I've found something about Direct Show Codecs but if someone knows it would be nice if you would post all that is needed to play a dvd on a windows 98 machine.

Windows generic driver should have no problem recognizing a DVD-ROM.
If your drive won't read a DVD it's either defective or it's not a DVD-ROM.

PowerDVD or WinDVD would have installed any codec needed for playing DVD.
If you open the disk in Explorer, can read the file structure of the DVD?
