    Wide screen:

A video image wider than the standard 1.33 (4:3) aspect ratio. When referring to DVD or HDTV, widescreen usually indicates a 1.78 (16:9) aspect ratio.

When you purchase a DVD with this 16*9 ratio, it will appear with the black bars on the top and bottom of your TV screen. This is the viewing ratio similar to what you see in the theater. A movie that has been modified to show in the 4*3 ratio would take up the whole TV screen.

Some DVDs come with both widescreen and full screen on the same DVD. Some have it as an option at the time of purchase (2 separate editions, each with a different format.) Some are only available in one format.

When it comes to formats, it is really a matter of your personal preference as to which you like better. You will tend to see "more" of the movie in widescreen but have to deal with the black bars. In general, widescreen is the prefered format for most people.

It is the same but it isn't. Think of it like taking a picture with a still camera. You have two different cameras with you, a normal viewing one, and a panoramic view one. Both of the cameras can take the same picture of the same thing. The panoramic view just shows more (a wider view) of the surrounding area.

Widescreen shows about 1/3 more, fullscreen butchers the video.

Well you better get used to it. In the future all TV broadcasts will be in widescreen. Get a widescreen TV then you won't see any bars. Unless its 2.35:1 then you'll see small ones top and bottom.
