Hello all, has anybody used the kypermedia 8X DVD+R burner yet?? it is available at officemax for $70 after rebate. just burnbed a data disc at 8X with a 4X memorex DVD+R. this drive has an 8mb buffer. no -R, but seems to be a solid 8X +R burner.

DVDDave,
Does this drive automatically change the booktype from DVD+R to DVD-ROM (which is more compatible with standalong DVD players) when it finishes burning?
Thanks -

Yeah I called today and my store has like 5 left too.....that kinda scares me away alittle. Plus the $50 rebate will take about 3 months to get back, and I hate sending them off..

well, i just burnt my DVD back-up. i used clone dvd and took an 8gig plus movie and brought it down to 4.3gig. total time to rip and burn was 32 minutes---burn time was 7 minutes. i used memorex 4X DVD+R. it plays in my sony stand alone just fine. not a bad burner--build quality is good. drive tray opens and closes quietly, and it burns 4X media at 8X. only draw back is it is not a dual format. but the price and quality seem to be right.
any thoughts?? -
3 reasons to avoid
1. KHypermedia

lordsmurf--i see you post a lot, and i see you help people. do you have a KHypermedia 8X burner in your rig to test/try??? why would you write off something you have not tried. i am not saying this burner is the next best creation, but, maybe a real good value. at $70 after rebate, maybe some people who can't afford a DVD burner now can. we all know that most of this stuff is re-boxed/badged. and although having a dual format is preferred, i generally go with + as i can play memorex plus in all that i own--and i own about 10 different types of DVD players--stand alone/PC/laptop/portable.....SO DON'T KNOCK SOMETHING YOU HAVE NOT TRIED--YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reasons I listed don't need testing of any kind.
Khypermedia bad company with many sub-par products.
OfficeMax rebates are a bitch.
Only +R is old, most people are going dual.

I, like DVDDave, bought one to try out after getting the Micro Advantage from Officemax for ~$50 that was originally posted by lordsmurf. That drive turned out to be a BTC 1004IM, not such a great drive. Unlike that drive, this Cyberdrive has worked wonderfully with all the + media I have on hand. I am curious about one more thing, do you consider the HP drives crap for + only and how about the Phillips drives. The Cyberdrive also sets the booktype to DVD-ROM by default and I have no problems playing them on any player I have tried. I think I can compare this drive fairly accurately given I have a Pioneer 105, Nec 1300a, BTC 1004IM at home and a Sony 500a and a Pioneer 106 at work. This drive is better at + media that any of the rest, period. My Pioneer 105 is the best at - media. These are my opinions that come from real world experience. As far as dual format goes, who cares. I don't think to many manufaturers are putting out players that can't read both these days and most produceds in the last few years will read + with the book type set to DVD-ROM anyways.

My BTC on 0045 fw has given zero problems. I feed it RICOHJPN, MXLRG01, TDKG02 and RITEKG04 all the time. Best $58 I ever spent.
Only stuff it choked on was C-grade RITEKG03 and PRINCO. No surprise, my Pioneer 105 does the same. Neither are great media these days.
Cyberhome, Samsung, Apex, Philips and several others have new players that refuse DVD+R but accept DVD-R. I deal with this from customers, friends, family and personal experiences all the time. Call them "junk players" if you want, but they sell all the time all over the place.
My usage of DVD+R was short-lived because of it. Not as compatible, even when changing booktype (on another drive, not mine).
If you don't like my suggestions, then ignore them. Just telling you my 2 cents and what works for me.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Of course everyone has their own opinion, and its good to have these heated discussions. Remember, we are all doing different things with different equipment and the more input we have the better so we can learn more. On top of that we all have our levels of expertise. lordsmurf has some good input on a wide variety of subjects. my experience using khypermedia media has been great (pioneer 105) up to 150+ with 1 single coaster. not having a +R drive i am seriously thinking about picking this up so i too can have dual format (via 2 drives). i am sure someone at khypermedia or any other company for that matter monitors these forums and strives to give their prospective customers what they want.
by the way, anyone going to the COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL IN INDIO IN MAY! (sorry couldnt resist) -
