  1. I looking to by some DVD burner software for my Lite-On 411s. Is Nero 6 anygood? I've heard mixed opinions. I use Ritek G04s and I basically use just my unmodded XBOX for playback.

I have used Nero almost all my burning life and it has been very goodd with the setups I have had. I have heard of people experiencing problems putting Nero with Liteon DVD burners in the past though - mainly just limitations like only being able to burn at half the speed they should and such. Download a demo and give it a try. See if it suits your setup.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If you want something with a lot of bells and whistles you dont need, use Nero 6, if you just back up movies and data go for Nero 5.5.10.54

  4. Nero 6 is a big, extremely valuable set of software. You get:

    - a super burning program
    - a very good authoring program
    - a best-in-class transcoding program, imo
    - a solid dvd playback software

It has a weakness when it comes to editing clips, but it is possible to do it.

I think Nero 6 offers more value for price than ANY other software package I've bought.

I have to agree with accountwiz. The burning engine is solid. The "bells and whistles" are quite valuable like Recode 2 for example. You now have the option of converting DVD's to Nero Digital(mp4) at super speeds that rival Divx in quality. And playing DVD's with Nero Showtime look even better than they do when I use WinDVD or Power DVD. Nero Ultra Edition is in a class of its own.

  8. Can I expand on that thought?

I like Nero 5.5.10.42, although I don't use it much. Nero 6 seemed like such big change from the v5 code that I figured I'd wait and let them iron out the bugs before I invested. I use Nero for audio and some data, but not video. I prefer VCDEasy and DVD-lab.

    There's my 2¢.

I just got Nero 6 Ultra 2 weeks ago, it works great--all the programs work well, and Recode 2 is my new favorite! I did find that RecordNow is still faster for exact copy backups, but Nero 6 is sweet!!

Nero may be crap to some people, but it works 100% of the time for me. Never a problem and I burn alot of dvd's and cd's.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0

  11. Me too... Nero is my chief squeeze for DVDR and CDR work. No substitutes accepted. Most (all) of my errors are due to crap media.

I've only had 3 problems with Nero:

    1. Using a buggy version. Update fixed that.
    2. I was being a moron. My own stupidity caused errors.
    3. Bad media. My fault for trying to be cheap.

    It's a winner, undoubtely

    And cheap too...the only drawback is to keep an eye on regular updates, as Ahead seems to be too much in a hurry to put it on the street and frequently buggy versions appear, that they fix quickly;

Very true. I've updated twice since I first installed version 6. Now there's even a third update available but since I have no problems with my present build, don't see the need to upgrade.

All that aside, I do stand by their product completely.

Nero has shown me the best email support experience to date. I always get a response with in 3 business days and they have always provided useful information.

Nero was updated 3 times in December. The entire suite on the 12th, the Main program on the 24th and again of the 28th. I agree that the DVD encoding/authoring software is being refined.

I've had no problems with Nero whatsoever. All my backup DVD movies burned fine and play great! Just like you, I am using a 411S and Ritek media.

I have Nero 5.5.10.42 and have had no problems burning dvd's with it. My question to you who use Nero 6 is---is there any overwhelming reason to upgrade to 6? The only thing in the suite that interests me even mildly is Nero Recode 2, and with DVDShrink 3.1 out now, that is NOT sufficient reason. I already own WinDVD and PowerDVD, so am not interested in Showtime. Authoring tools? eh, plenty of other choices if you're into that, and most of the people with that interest already have them.
Until 5.5 becomes totally obsolete, I just don't see the need.

I'm using the latest version of Nero 5 and it works great with my NEC1300a.

I'm using the latest 1.09 hacked firmware for the drive.

    Learn your Nero Products!!!

There are 4 distinctive bundles, and the price varies by bundle.

The basic Nero Burning Rom is the CD/DVD burner part. It works very well. Most peoples problems are that they didn't burn it right (like not putting files IN the VIDEO_TS folder). Current version is 6.3.0.2 and it works great for me (and has been for years).

There are freeware alternatives, but they always take longer. If you want to jsut backup DVD's then get DVDShrink 3.1.1 , it burns DVD's on it's own and it's free.
