I just keep hearing bits and pieces about this but is it true and if so, is it going to be real expensive.
Just curious.

It looks like it: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.asp?RelatedID=4207
I haven't really seen anything on DVD-R dual layer burners though
It definitely don't think it will be cheap. I don't think a lot of people will even bother with them for a few years unless they have the cash to blow.
I mean, think about it: spend a couple of hundred more on a dual layer burner, a lot more on dual layer discs and burn 4 hours worth of video on one disc OR simply keep buying relatively inexpensive single layer DVD's and just split the 4 hours over 2 discs (which will still probably cost less than one dual layer recordable disc).
I will definitely be holding back for a while to see what happens with blu-ray. If it is a no go and hi-def dvd takes its place i will probably invest in a dual-layer burner then. -
I read on Phillips' website about their new technology for the dual-layer dvd. It is very interesting and very promising. They claim the burners and stand alone recorders will be available this year (2004), but I can't imagine it will be cheap. You are definately better off sticking with the single layer for now and either compressing the data or splitting it into two disks.
I have one question though... Is there a reason why they don't make double sided dvd+r/w? That would make it much more convenient, even though you wouldn't be able to make labels for them..
