How do I unlock stubborn files?

All,

I have tried many different ways to read a few of my mates dvd-r's to copy them for him.

They all fail at various stages, i.e. dvd decryptor at 49%, smart ripper says some files cannot be unlocked, instant copy says there are damaged files and so on.

I have been told it may be something to do with buffers etc but have no idea what they mean.

Does anybody out there know of a different way i could try to read the dvd to my pc?

Try playing the main movie while you are ripping, letting the DVD unlock itself.
