  1. I have been using the Maxell brand DVD-R 4x discs, some from Japan, which are yellow topped and come in the 5 pack jewel case, and the Taiwan made versions that come in the 15 pack spindle. I found these worked great and also allowed me to use labels on them without causing playback problems.

My problem now is that in my area, these brands are very hard to come by, and as such have gone up in price, by almost $10 CDN in some instances. This has forced me to find another media that is just as good or better then what I have been using.

I checked out the blankmedia.ca web site and they have both Ritek G04 and the Taiyo Yuden 4x media, and from what I have read on this forum, both of these seem to be highly recommended.

My question is, how do these compare to the Maxell branded media, and is there any advantage or disadvantage with picking one over the other?

    Thanks,

I feel your pain. I just paid $16.99 CAN for 5 Maxell 4X at Futureshop today.

Both Ritek and Taiyo Yuden (especially Taiyo Yuden) are well respected. You'll be fine with either.

Be carefull if purchasing from these guys. They are selling fake, unbranded Maxell DVD-R's. They are also selling unbranded Ritek and Taiyo Yuden discs.

If they seem too good to be true they usually are!

Maxell 4X yellow top at Wal-Mart Canada for $12.99 a 5 pack. Get Futureshop to lower their price (pricematch). The fake Maxell green tops were just plain bad 75% error rate on the ones I got from Compusmart. Futureshop had the real Maxell 2X green top discs on sale last week for $9.99 a 5 pack. You just have to do more shopping...

All 3 of the Wal-Mart's near me have not carried the DVD-R 5 packs since the first week of December and they have no idea when or if they are getting more in. I also tried Futureshop, but they were apparently sold out within a few days of going on sale, and never did get any more in before the sale ended.

London drugs has them, but sells them for $16.99 a 5-pack, or $36.99 for a 15 pack spindle vs $24.99 they use to be a few weeks ago. I also tried Staples, but all they carry are Verbatim, Sony or Fuji, and Costco just has the Taiwan 2x 15-pack spindles for $36 as well.

Are you sure this site is not on the "up and up" as I checked a few other forums, including this one, and this is the first I have heard of anyone saying anything negative about them.

I did notice they were selling the "Fake" Maxell 2x media, but they did not say it was original Maxell media, just Maxell coded, so to me it seemed they were not trying to hide that fact.

I did order a few samples of their Ritek G04 and TY 4x DVD-R media, just to see how they would work in my DVD player and burner.

Once the samples show up, does anybody know what I should be looking for on the media itself to see if these are indeed original Ritek and TY media and not "fake" discs with the Ritek and TY code on them?

    Thanks,
