  1. I'm using StudioDV to capture DV from my camcorder. Using Win98se and full quality (720x480). Things go fine untill I get to around 8-10 min captured and then it starts to drop frames. This will happen if I am doing one large file or several smaller ones. When I hit the 8-10 min total mark, dropping starts. Rebooting the machine lets me go another period.

My specs are, 1.1G Tbird, 256M PC133, ATA100 HD. Plenty of room on the drive I'm capturing to. I've tried letting Windows manage the swap file and also fixing it at 500 meg.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

  2. Have you checked out:
    http://www.pinnaclesys.com/support/faq/ViewFAQ_US.asp?id=2202&lge_id=1

There is also a lot of info in the back of the book that comes with Studio DV that helps with drive and windows configuration to help reduce dropped frames. If you don't have the book, email me, I will look in my book.

I am using Win98SE, 800 Duron, 128M PC133, ATA100 HD with usually at MOST 1 dropped frame during my captures.

Hope this helps (at least a little).

  3. The only thing I could think of is if you didn't have DMA on. Check the write/read speed of your drive.

  4. Thanks for the input nittany,

I've tried the things they recommend, ie., stutdown other programs, use a different drive, defrag, etc. No joy. I think the main issue is, why does it capture fine for almost 10 min and then start having problems? Like I said, if I reboot I can go another 10 mins before it starts happening again.

  5. Hi Tommy,

ATA100 drives don't use DMA. Or should say, in the device manager the DMA selection is greyed out.

  6. TDog2112,

Just a wild guess on this one. Have you tried disabling both the bios and Windows power saver settings? If it is consistent in regards to around 10 minutes, maybe some power saver setting is trying to shut something down in 10 minutes. Microsoft has never been too good at dealing with power saver stuff. Let me know if this works.
