DVD player formatting

I'm sure it's been covered before and I apologize for doing this again.

Is there anyway to find out if a stand alone DVD player will play certain formats (dvd-r/dvd+r) without doing a back up first? :/

I don't have the funds nor the resources to buy one only to find that my player won't play that format.

As always, all help is appreciated.
