Hi, i'm sorry if this has been asked before, but i'm going to buy a new dvd-writer and from what the majority of people say, it seems that the pioneer A06 is the most preferred.
I heard that the pioneer has problems with encryptions, i was wanting to use the dvd-writer to back-up my ps2 dvd's and dvd-movies, but if the pioneer cant get passed the encryption then what other options do i have??
If anyone can give me any advice on whether the pioneer is the best to get or whether i should opt for another one, it will be greatly appreciated !!
I intend to use my dvd-writer for backing up dvd's and maybe encoding vcd's to dvd's etc
Thanks

someone mentioned it in one of the forums!!
I take it is was just rubbish then?? -
I have a 104 and was going to get the 106 but read it was not real reliable on the + R and +RW aspects. I instead got a Lite-On -411s which does +RW @ 4x and am very happy so far (I've only had it 4 days. Got it at BestBuy for 79.99 after MIR. Time will tell). Now instead of waiting an hour for a -RW disc to burn @ 1x, I can preview my final product in 15 minutes @ 4x, even better than 2.4x +RW that most of the dual format burners do.

Go Pioneer !
I have the 106 with Nero, Smartripper and DVDShrink with no problems whatsoever. I have heard of other burners having problems with Nero but it is a 50/50 as to whether the burners are to blame or Nero.
That encryption crap is from someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.....they probably tried to copy the VOBs in Windows Explorer !If in doubt, Google it. -

I have heard that the Lite-ons are excellent for + but not as good as pioneer for -. Again, as has been said many times on this forum, whatever floats your boat.If in doubt, Google it. -

Seems weird they only do 2X -RW but 4X+RW ? You'd reckon they'd step both up at the same time ?
You learn something new every day.
I'll stick with -R/RW and the Pioneer 106 because it works for me.If in doubt, Google it. -
It "seems" the companies who do the + R/+RW are a little more advanced on the speed issue (See the 8x + writers out now) but I'm sure the -R/-RW people will do all they can to close the gap. Then just when that is settled the dual layer burners will start appearing LOL.

I have Pioneer A06 and couldn't ask for a better performing writer. Write -R's at 2X & 4X, +R's at 2.4X and +RW at 2.4 X. Have written many in all four formats with no problems, but have settled mainly with the -R and +RW as they seem to be the most compatible with the different players. I really don't like to write faster than 2X to keep the write errors to a min. Use Nero 5.5 and Record Now DX with nearly perfect results. Even better since I have started letting IFOEdit do the stripping (eliminates "layer Break" better than DVDShrink) and then DVD Shrink to prepare for burning (Nero was rejecting IFOEdits end product even when they were the proper size - Ran them back thru Shrink and no problems. For me they A06 will be my Writer of choice for many moons.

The Pioneer's are good drives - I have an 04 and use 05's at work.
I still advocate a DVD-ROM drive for ripping, though - they're often faster and cheaper to replace if you wear it out. I suggest leaving the writer to do just that, but that's just my opinion. -

dont see the pont in getting an 8speed writer as the advent of newer formats beckons, anyways, from what ive seen, the difference in speed is pretty negligable.
well on my friends it is anyways,as errors on media seem to be a constant problem to him.
but i suppose thats what you get burning 4speed media at 8speed. -
hey, just like to thank all for the help !!
it is greatly appreciated, and i just bought the pioneer 106, the other day !!
now time to have fun with it!!
Only thing is, my monitor broke down !!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, jus wanted to ask also, is it possible to get firmware downloads for the 106 to further upgrade the writer??
sorry to ask the question, but what does firmware do??
does that mean i can get the firmware to upgrade the pioneer 106 to 8x??
thanks again for the help -
there is a sticky at top of this forum page ...that might help.
so far the hack makes the burner write 2x to 1x media
increases Ripping from 2x to 12x
and makes the burner REGION free!
Good luck and take your time and make sure you get the right firmware for your burner!
It was easy and took 2 minutes!
