I have a DVD R with AC3 sound that won't play on my Pioneer DVD player. I want to demultiplex and convert the audio. I think I have the software to do it but how do I demultiplex in the first place? I haven't found what I would call adequate guides for Smartriopper or DVD Derypter.

If you have a DVD-R then it's one that you created so it has no copy protection. Just copy the contents from the DVD to a working DVD folder on your HDD with Windows Explorer. You only need to rip DVDs that have copy protection enabled.
Once you get the VOB files to your HDD run TMPGEnc, File, MPEG TOOLS, De-Multiplex, Type of files=all files *.*, browse to and double click you first vob. Double click the video and all the AC3 audio streams and save them to your hard disk.
To Multiplex, use the Multiplex tab located in that same section.
Just remember to select "All Files *.*" in TMPGEnc or you won't be able to see your VOB files.
Good luck. -
OK bottle-necked, I tried that and it seems to work but do you have to demux each .VOB separately? And then would I need to convert each one separately?

Your vob files are in standard sizes and you will need to work with each file separately. I would do one at a time and put the finished product in a new folder or you may wind up getting lost with all those files.
After fixing your audio just Multiplex the video (m2v) and your audio into a brand new MPEG2 file. (don't forget to set the template properly). Name it the same as the original vob file except with the .mpg extention. Save it to a brand new folder. When you're done you'll have a new folder with nothing in it but your new MPEG2 files. Take that folder to author.
If you wish you can combine those vob files into 1 large vob. The easiest way to do that is to use DVD Decrypter in File Mode and adjust the settings menu to not split vobs and to create 1 big vob file, and rip the original DVD. I've did this and most times without any problems. But it's not fool proof, it has created vob files with errors in them at the split points. Actually it's not a good idea. I'd just work with the smaller vobs and keep them separated. It'll be ok, it's just a little harder to stay up with, that's all.
Author with TMPGEnc DVD Author. That program will except your new multiple MPEG2 files. Just create 1 Track and keep adding files (in the proper order) until they are all in. The program can create chapter points for each split file if you wish. That's easy to do. Just don't put them in different "TRACKS". The program would handle them like different movies if you do that. Not good.
Another good reason for using DVD Author is if this project should come out just a tad too big to fit a DVD-R, you can just bypass the warning screen and go ahead and create a DVD Folder on HDD. Just run DVD Shrink on that folder, shrink it down to fit, then burn it. Custom sized.
Ain't this stuff easy. Boy, we've come a long way in my short existance.
Good luck. -
Thanks wulf109, it sounds good but I wish these things came with the most basic of instructions. I don/t have a clue how to use it. It seems to want to open the VOBs only one at a time also.
