  1. I got a lot of beat up VHS tapes. What filters are you using (like "temporal smoother") and what settings (like "3"/"5"/"min"/"max"). I use virtualdub and have used avisynth before (but I'm not expert).

How are you capturing it and what are you converting it to?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I use a Wintv card with Virtualdub and capture from a VHS VCR through RCA. I am in a quandry as to whether to capture at 352x480 or 704x480 and resize. I've seen folks recommend both ways. My goal is a DVD compliant 352x480 MPEG-2 file to play on a standalone.

  4. I'm using a dvd-recorder, no filters, works perfect, no quality loss!

PS Rob, I see that Acorn avatar... I got an Acorn Electron computer
from 1983! Has an encredible 32kbyte of memory....
That includes videomemory, in minimum mode 21kb is available for
programmes.... ahhhh.... the times when you had to load a programme
    for 15 minutes from tape...

Capture at the higher res and capture as an uncompressed avi so that you don't get any artefacts from compression when you convert to mpeg.

I've done quite a few VHS conversions, so here are my personal preferences.....
Temporal smoothing seems to work pretty well, but you need to be quite light with it or you get some weird effects.
Some colour correction is usually useful as VHS tends to look a bit dull.
White balance can be useful, but again you need to be careful not to overdo it.
I tend to prefer the TMPGEnc noise reduction filters, though it does slow things down alot, and I wouldn't claim to have tested the VDub filters particularly thoroughly.
The future is much like the present, only longer.
