  1. Hi,

I am in the process of putting an AVI onto a DVD-R.

I used DVD Maestro to author the disc. Before burning I used WinDVD to test the movie and check that the resolution was widescreen which it was.

When I burnt the disc though and played it in my stand-alone DVD player the edges are cut off and the movie is not widescreen. I have check the setup to see that the 16:9 settings is set on.

    Any ideas why this is?

  2. DVD Maestro dont create 16:9 video movie vob file, so I dont understand how you got 16:9 ratio with windvd...
You need to use ifoedit to change ratio in ifo files created by maestro.

  3. You encoded it as an anamorphic 16:9? If you look at the bottom of the title set in Meastro there is a setting for 4:3, 16:9 or pan and scan.

  4. In DVD Maestro in selected '16:9 LB/PS'.

The movie definetly is playing widescreen in WinDVD. As I said my standalone i set to 16:9 but the edges are missing a considerable amount of the picture.

If I open IOFEdit the main movie VOB reads.....

    Title Set 1: VTS_1 Video: MPEG-2 720x576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50) (16:9)
    (pan-scan & letterboxed)

    Very very odd........

    Any ideas?

  5. I'm not very familiar with DVD Maestro, but I think I can see what your problem is:

To play correctly on a standalone player, the main movie IFO should read:

    (16:9) (letterboxed)

You are probably missing a piece of the picture on your player because the player is zooming in on the picture, creating a fullscreen/pan-scan picture. It's something that is on a few commercial DVDs. Let me give you an example:

I have a DVD, "Shaolin Soccer," that is this way (PS+Letterbox). The movie's aspect ratio is 1.85:1. If I play the DVD in my player, I will get three different outcomes.

If the player is set to 4:3 Pan Scan, the picture will be automatically zoomed in so that the letterbox bars are gone.

If the player is set to 4:3 Letterbox, the picture will appear normal on a 4:3 TV, with letterbox bars on top and bottom.

If the player is set to 16:9 Widescreen, the picture will appear normal on a widescreen TV, perfectly proportioned and in the original aspect ratio.

I just noticed that your original source was AVI. Perhaps it could be an encoding error?

Well, hopefully I've provided some help. Good luck.

  6. Hi thanks for the feedback,

DVD Maestro gives 4 options for the resolution:

    4:3
    16:9 LB/PS
    16:9 Letterbox
    16:9 Pan-Scan

The orginal AVI has the following properties......

    Video : 599 Mb, 945 Kbps, 23.976 fps, res. 624*336 (16:9), DIV3 = DivX v3 MPEG-4 (Low-Motion)

    Does this shed any light?

  7. You need to set it on 16/9. Not 16/9/pan scan. I don't think I have ever seen any title that uses pan scan.

In pan scan what you are telling the player to do is zoom in on the picture and you can pan back and forth if you want to see the rest of the image. I hope I explained that right.

  8. I've just authored the disc as 16:9 Letterbox and same problem. Also tried 16:9 LB/PS with no luck, note there is no 16:9!

So I've tried all options and can't get it widescreen, maybe I should try the disc in another stand alone player?

Did you encode the Avi into an MPG2 file WITH the 16/9 ratio option set? Use TMPGEnc and re-encode it properly if you havent with the DVD 16/9 wizard template - that should work - and make sure that the option for 16/9 is also set in DVD Maestro. Hopefully that should help.

  11. Yes I encoded the movie as a 16:9 widescreen PAL stream with the TempGenc template. I also selected widescreen in Maestro and yes my TV is widescreen.

It just seems odd that the disc plays widescreen in WinDVD put my standalone does not despite being set to 16:9 also.

  12. Ive Had similar problems now and again and i still havent really found a way round it , one way i found was to use a different encoder u might get a different result, I get the impression they dont all work exactly the same

I normally use Maintech Mpeg Encoder which is fine most of the time

The silliest one i had was i did a file and it was half size height widescreen
even using the tv to strech it it still wasnt big enough lol
    yet the origanal was normal
