  1. I have searched this site like mad, but can't seem to find exactly what I want to do. I got VirtualDub Mod and can open the VOB file I want to edit (some contrast/brightness and sharpening). After I edit, I don't know how to get it back to a VOB. I figure there is an intermediate step to go through. I just want to edit the video and save it back as a VOB file to reburn. What do I save as in VirtualDub Mod and then how do I take that and make a new VOB? Thank you.

  2. Wow, that's not that easy than that.

To sum it up, a VOB file is a container of multiple streams :

    1 MPEG2 Video stream
1 or more MPEG1/AC3/PCM/DTS Audio streams
1 or more subtitle streams, if any.

So if you want to edit the video streams -edit meaning changing video frames, not only cuting/merging- then to make a new VOB, you need to :

    - demultiplex your vob file to get all the streams
    - apply effect on the mpeg2 video stream -by Virtualdub Mod for example-
    - save your resulting video as an AVI (uncompressed for best result)
    - encode your avi to MPEG2 format -CANT be done by virtualdub Mod-
    - remultiplex your new video mpeg2 stream with other original streams to get a new VOB.

There are some tools that don't require the uncompress avi file step (which is a HUGE file) Theses apps, like AVISynth or maybe even Virtualdub Mod, can read mpeg2 video, apply effects and "serve" resulting video on the fly to the mpeg2 encoder. This is called "frameserving".

Last but not least, you need to find a good mpeg2 encoder, because this step is very time consuming and has a lot of impact on resulting video quality.
    Good luck!

  3. Can I take the VOB file and make a full MPEG2 with the audio? It might be easier to just completely reauthor the dvd. I have taken TMPGenc and made MPEG2 files with audio (with the DVD presets) from other videos so I know how to do that. I won't mind learning how to authro a dvd with making a menu and such. Don't you take a MPEG2 video (with audio) and the VOB file is then created? (about to look and see if I am right). I think just taking the VOB and making a MPEG2 file with audio may be the best. If I am wrong here, please tell me. Thanks.

  4. I don't really understand what you mean, but the different steps I described are a way to reauthor a dvd, I just ommited menu creation a the end. (multiplexing mpeg streams to get vob files can be called dvd authoring without menus; as done by IfoEdit for example)

  5. I just wanted to take the dvd, get the videos on the dvd into a file format so I could edit them, then reburn with the least amount of steps and not losing any quality. I got a lot to learn so, thanks for what you have told me.
