what happens to the chapter markers when you take two 1 hour dvds you made off of your DVDR (which you put chapter markers on) & transfer them to your PC & slice & dice them in editing then rejoin them into a new 1 hour movie??

You loose them in process of " transfer them to your PC". Chapters are part of DVD Authoring and not video/audio stream. At least that is my unederstanding, but I might be wrong.

Hi,
It depends on the software. TMPGEnc DVD Author will read your original VIDEO_TS and transfer the chapter marks if you wish.

True, but TMPGEnc DVD Author does not have editing capabilities as far as I know. As donpedro correctly explained, once you "slice & dice them in editing" the chapters are gone.

Hi,
It is true that chapter marks are not part of video stream. However it is part of .ifo file. If you just copy .vob files to hard disk and rename them .mpg then use "import video stream" option in TMPGEnc DVD Author then you got no chapter marks information. But if you copy the whole VIDEO_TS folder to hard disk and then use "import DVD-video" option, TMPGEnc DVD Author will let you import chapter marks into your new project. I have been doing it everyday and works very well for me. I used a LiteOn 5001 to capture Sony Video8 tapes using a digital8 camcorder via firewire. Then I take the DVD+RW to my PC and copy the VIDEO_TS to hard disk. Use TMPGEnc DVD Author to import the video using "import DVD-Video". Adjust chapter marks, cut out unwanted part, make a simple menu then output and burn to DVD-R. Whole process is about 45 minutes. I do not know this method will work for DVD-RW or DVD-RAM or even DVD+RW made by other recorder, but it works very well in my setup. I also tried neoDVD and MovieFactory, they could not import chapter marks.

Have you been recording any of your DVD's in the EP (4 hour) mode on the Liteon recorder? I just tried it for the first time and got a disk that plays fine but can't be copied because the EP stream is not DVD compliant. I have not tried using TMPGenc yet tho. But I'd like to know if you have tried it?
If the DVD is recorded in SP (2 hour) mode there are several ways to copy it - no problem there. But it's starting to look like the 4 hour mode is a mixed blessing if it produces dvd's that can't be copied! -
Hi, Yumagah:
So far I only used HQ(1 hour) and SP(2hours). Never tried EP. I saw another post said the same thing about the EP. LiteOn used 720x480 for HQ and SP, 352X480 for EP. But 352x480 is still DVD compliant. I will try EP and let you know.

Hi, Yumagah:
I just finished a 4 hours EP recording. Copy and paste the VIDEO_TS to hard disk without problem. I also tried DVD Decrypter 3.190 without problem (file mode). I do not quite understand why it did not work in your case. I open up the VIDEO_TS file and could not see any difference in file names or file sizes from SP mode. LiteOn only records in DVD+VR format. Of course the VIDEO_TS is not totally DVD-video compliant. Nero can not process the VIDEO_TS without some modification. But TMPG DVD Author is able to process it.

Whats wrong with just pausing the DVD+RW in the machine at the correct spot and using "Divide Title" instead of inserting chapter markers? Wouldn't that be more permanent?

Hi,
LiteOn can not do that. It can not add chapter marks either. LiteOn got very limited editing fuction. You can only add a 8 characters title, overwrite or delete titles. That is about it. But I only paid $209 for it. For a machine with firewire input and good picture quality, it is still a good deal. Since I am going to process the video on the PC anyway (to add title, menu and convert the DVD+VR format to DVD-video), the lacking of editing capacity does not bother me at all.

I am not sure whether the problem is in the EP mode or the .IFO .BUP files, but I know that DVD Decrypter made perfect copies of disks I burned in 2 hour SP mode. But it will not copy this disk except to copy the files to hard drive. I will check my version and maybe update.
I tried re-authoring the .vob files with Arcsoft Showbiz, but it did not process the EP title correctly. I got a disk with the SP video on it but no EP.
I read on a discussion about the Liteon that replacing the .bup file with the .ifo file allows the files to be burned into a dvd-video by Nero. I tried this but it made no difference for DVDDecrypter, DVDshrink or CloneDVD.
I think I just may end up splitting the 2hr 16 min movie onto two DVD+R in SP mode! More disks but less hassle. -
It turned out to be a media/drive incompatibility problem. The HP drive was having trouble reading that particular Fuji RW disk. Rather than re-record the disk, I found another DVD drive that could read it without errors. Then I transferred the whole disk image via Ethernet to the PC with the burner.
It takes about 1 hour 15 min to copy 4.6 gig thru a 10 mbps Ethernet.
DVD decrypter splits ISO files on Win 98 FAT32 systems and reconstructs the disk thru a .MDS file. It works! -
I'm learning more about this as I go. Someone else posted a helpful clue that solved the problem. The problem is when I record a +RW disk on the Liteon and then try to copy it on a PC DVD recorder. The DVD writer detects that the RW disk is not finalized so when it comes to the end of the data on the disk, DVDDecrypter gives errors in ISO mode and stops. But if you save the "incomplete" ISO file, which is not really incomplete at all, you can then burn it as an ISO file and it works. Depending on how much data is on the RW disk, you can get the error before 99% read. Sometimes well before it. But the resulting ISO file burns correctly and makes an exact copy. What was extra confusing is that some +RW disks do not give this error - they read ok to the end.
