I was just wondering if there is a way to tell how high my bitrate can be set at before my set top player has problems with playing my svcd's ?Is there a way to distinguish that from the included manual provided with the set top player? Also ,will it be different among the different brands of players or is there a set value they all use.For example if I went into a store to buy one ,would I be able to tell that the sony was able to handle a higher bitrate than that jvc I wanted to buy?Hope my Question was clear enough. Thanks

Most can handle at least higher than the ~2778kbit max that SVCD allows, but it varies and there is no way to know except to try. You can check the dvd player list on this site to see what kinds of success other users have had at higher bitrates, but if you want to know for sure than just make yourself a little demo disk. Start with a combined bitrate around 2778kbits, which any SVCD compatible player should be able to play. From there maybe go up in 300-500kbit increments and just go crazy in Best Buy. Just keep track of how many tracks it goes through to see what bitrate that player supports.

Do a few sample encodes. I found my player will do SVCD up to 5000, which is more than enough bitrate.
Do the same 1 minute scene, but do it as 1500/2000/2500/3000/3500/4000/4500/5000 and make a single disk with them (mark them so you know the bitrate). I love pulling out this disk in a store and testing players. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan
