  1. this may not be the right forum but i'll try anyway, i have been using the VLC media player for quite sometime with great success until recently, i r installed quicktime 6.4 and i-tunes 4.1 then did a repair of permissions from disc utility, now i cannot get any audio to come out of my digital audio output from my m-audio revolution soundcard, i get an error saying "core audio failed to set buffer size nope" i play my dvd's from my G4 to my projector and denon receiver, what gets me is that everything was fine when i was using quicktime 6.3 and i-tunes 4.0 now i have a huge problem, anyone have any answers or suggestions or possibly the same dilemma as me, PLEASE HELPPPPPP!!!!!

    what os are you running?

    10.2.X? 10.3?

This might make all the difference.

  3. i am running 10.2.8 i downloaded the update after apple fixed the first
update problem, like i said in my earlier post, the only problem i have with vlc is that it does not allow 5.1 audio out of the coaxial output of my revo card which has the 1.2.7 driver, all was working well until i updated quicktime and itunes then repaired permissions, i can look at the coreaudio framework components in the system folder and something was modified to them around the time i did the update and disc permissions, should i do an archive install of 10.2 then get back to 10.2.6 or 10.2.8 or is there another way around fixing the coreaudio error problem i have with vlc??

Now you've got me worried this thing won't work in Panther (it just arrived, woo hoo!) ... I mean, if it forces me to use Quicktime 6.4 ... Right now on Jaguar I didn't go to QT6.4 when I went to iTunes 4.1 ...

This might not be the case, but i heard that 10.2.8 has severe problems with digital audio devices, even AFTER the so called fix Apple put out. Try upgrading to Panther, or archive and install 10.2

  7. i did have to archive and install back to 10.2 then upgraded to 10.2.6
not going to 10.2.8 again after days of trying to figure out what went wrong and hours of reinstalling and fixing other appls as a result of back peddling system software i am finally back to where i was hooray, wish osx had a
"go back" feature like some pc systems have.....

Don't wish that... Instead wish that Apple could "get it right" the first and second time.

We should NEVER EVER need to revert to older system software. Neither should Windows users for that matter.

  10. Yeah, I'm having the same 10.2.8 mpeg issue. I reinstalled the mpeg2 QT component but still no dice. What are peoples experience with 10.3 and this component and video funkyness in general?
    The future is tomorrow!

Plays just the same, if not better than 10.2.6
I never updated to 10.2.8 because I was waiting for 10.3

Plus, after hearing all the bad things with 10.2.8 I decied even more to just wait.

Panther is great! iChat is a little flakey and apparently lots of people on apple.com are reporting it so im sure there will be an update soon that will hopefully fix that.

  12. I cannot run VLC at all for DVDs. It will work for small video files, but i haven't been able to use it for any region code DVDs so far. Why??

how is it you have the app open dvd's?

  14. ok, this problem is severe now.

Core audio: Failed to set buffer" Same error. VLC somehow set my system audio output to digital instead of built in. All my audio is muted. I can NOT unmute. Stuck on mute. Rebooted, deleted VLC etc.

    Still stuck on mute.

I reported the bug to VideoLan list. Hopefully I'll get a reply.

I have NO AUDIO now until I get a reply and this is VERY bad because I just got a new DP G5 and need it for audio work. It is stuck on Digital Output too.

    Arggh

    DP G5
    Panther
    Quicktime 6.4
    Mpeg 2 component

    IS this component the problem?

    Your talking your SYSTEM output?!?
as in your entire audio output?

i would suggest running a repair permissions or some form of disk utilitiy
(Drive 10, Disk Warrior 3) to see if it cant be corrected.

    otherwise, i have no clue!
you could also perhaps contact apple on this and see if they have suggestions for "stuck on mute" audio output.

  16. Well yes it was the system output that was stuck on mute but after a couple of reboots it came back. Weird.

However this still doesn't solve my problem with VLC.

    Dang!!!

I also tried MPlayer like you said but that was weird. No video/audio.

Question. What is the best way(cleanest) for me to UNinstall Quicktime 6.4 and install 6.3? There is Quicktime stuff everywhere.

    Thanks

There's a thread here with the solution, in case anyone was having this problem still. That -1 to 1 change at the end of that topic did the trick for me (I was getting the same error on my G5 running 10.3.2, with VLC 0.6.2 on a muxed .VOB with stereo AC3 audio).
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."
