  1. Hello all,

I am somewhat new to the authoring process of DVD's. I've been ripping my collection to my hard drive and decided I wanted to start making backups. What I'd like to do is have 1 DVD5 with the movie and audio, and another DVD5 with all of the extras. Obviously, the "extras" DVD5 would need to keep the menu intact.

I'm thinking that I'd use DVDSHRINK to backup the main movie and audio only (no compression) then burn using nero. Next, I'd use DVDSHRINK to reauthor, stripping out the main movie and leaving everything else. Would this leave the menu structure intact on the "extras" disc (except of course for the play movie bit)?

I've read through a bunch of the guides but none of the ones I've seen really deal with splitting the DVD9 up like this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm affraid that would not work.
The menus become "normal" video streams when dragged to the re-author window, and lose their functionality.

One thing you could try is to apply "Still pictures" to the movie-title as well as remove all its audio streams (in Full-disk mode).
With a bit of luck, this would save enough space for the menu and extras to fit on one DVD-R without requiring any compression.
Obviously, the DVD structure would be left intact.

  3. ddlooping,

Thanks for the heads up. I've been doing a ton of reading and had realized that shrink might not be able to do it. So I've thought of this scenario:

    1) use DVDFAB to split DVD9 into 2 DVD5 folders
Folder 1 (by default) has menu, extras, and whatever amount of movie can fit.
Folder 2 has the rest of the movie

    2) delete Folder 2
Now I have a working "Extras" disc with menus

3a) Use DVDSHRINK to isolate the movie/audio stream only (no menus needed).
Now I have a working "Movie" disc with no menus

3b) If I want menus on the "Movie" disc, I'll use one of the previously well defined methods of ripping the movie with working menu's (Nokio's method)

I've also thought about the method that you mentioned, of using picture for the movie title and removing the soundtrack. It is also another viable option, assuming that the extras and picture files will fit. The benefit to using DVDFAB is that it will definitely fit the extras and menu's on the first disc.

I believe that these tools are also part of the free DVDFAB so no cost would be incurred.

    Seem reasonable?

    Russ

P.S. Slightly OT. If I simply replaced the main movie vob files with very small vob files (identically named) would that work?

  4. Your scenario does seem sound.

"P.S. Slightly OT. If I simply replaced the main movie vob files with very small vob files (identically named) would that work?"

It could work, depending on how "picky" your DVD player is.
But I can't say for sure how compatible your backups would be.
In any case, I'd suggest you use IfoEdit "Get VTS sectors".

  5. Thanks ddlooping,

Hopefully, I'll have a chance to play around with this tonight, if the baby is cooperating

I'll be sure to report back on my findings. I think that it would be pretty useful for those of us who actually like the extras as well as the movie.

of course it will work. If you wanted you could replace the whole DVD with blanks and just have a working menu as long as you do it correctly

try the Replace Movie/Extras guides on my site HERE to get rid of the movie and leave the extras

2COOL also has some strippings guides that will help

  8. MackemX,

I saw your site a couple of times, but I never saw the "replace movie/extras" part before. I'll have to look at that when I get back home this afternoon.

In the meantime, it worked. There are 2 scenarios:

    1)the movie/soundtrack will fit on 1 dvd
2)the movie/soundtrack will not fit on 1 dvd

If the movie/soundtrack will fit on 1 dvd, then I use DVDFAB to rip just the movie/soundtrack. Then I run DVDFAB again using the "copy complete DVD" and it will put the extras/menu's etc on the first disc and the rest of the movie on the second disk. I simply delete the second disk. All the menus work and now I have a perfect copy of the movie on 1 disc and the extras, etc. on the second disk.

    If the movie/soundtrack will not fit on 1 dvd you have 2 choices;

    ...keep the movie 100%quality
If this is the case, I'll just use DVDFAB's "copy complete dvd" since I'll have to switch discs anyway. This gives me 2 DVD's, the first with the extras/menu/first part of the movie, and the second with the rest of the movie.

    ...compress the movie to fit
If this is the case, I'll first run DVDFAB to do the "copy complete DVD" and discard the second disc. Then I'll run DVDSHRINK and compress the main movie/soundtrack to fit on 1 disc. Now I have a compressed copy of the movie on 1 disc, and the extras/menus/etc. on a second disc.

These methods are very easy, 1-click style solutions that anyone can accomplish. If you wish to keep the menu structure on the disc with the movie/soundtrack, I suggest you try nokio's or one of the many other methods.

I was able to rip "The rookie" using this method with no problem, and now have a perfect backup copy.

your right, there's so many ways to get the results you desire , some free, some cheap and some a little expensive

personally I use the Mini 3 which is DVDStripper, MenuEdit and DVDShrink which although 2 ain't free (£15 last time I checked), gives me so much authoring power for little expense . With that combo I can put the movie on 1 DVD and extras on the other, both with menu's (or movie-only) and disable the buttons for each DVD

I know I can do it free, I always did and that's how I learnt so much, but the user time and effort it took wasn't free . To remove things like individual warnings, start/end credits, extras takes more than a few minutes and user time costs money in my eyes although some can be done real quickly manually which I also still would use. You just gotta see what is involved to get the desired results before you decide what route to take

I guess everyone has their own preferences from using a simple one clicker to backup the complete DVD to using the Big 3

p.s. be careful as some of my guides are around 8 months old and out of date(but I leave them online to give a general idea to people), so 2COOL's are better to use as they are more up to date. My 2 flash guides are OK as I did those about 2 months ago

  10. mackemX,

Yeah, there are a bunch of cheap tools that are very powerful. I do like the menuedit tool. It seems like a great way to customize, although I've not used it yet. What do you use DVDStripper for primarily?

I don't really use it even though I thought of it, lol , I just test it and develop it but I know what it can do and it's got it's uses for some people

it can be used for many things but it's used for stripping absolutely anything you want from a DVD including start/end credits for example. If you remove the intros before menu it will skip straight to the menu also

the only thing you cannot do is movie only but Shrink does that

most of the stuff is listed in the Tools section under DVDStripper but can do a few more things

and Menuedit is the icing on the cake for me

Since I'm not so familiar with DVDStripper yet, I'd just use CloneDVD or IC8 to do this, but then again I have a lot of software that most people have to pay for.
