  1. I've learned a lot lurking here, thanks to all who've helped others here.
My problem- I have Imation DVD+R's that are giving pretty consistant errors at sector 1559658. Same CDB codes on each, or very similar. They are CDB 28 00 00 17 CC 6A 00 00 01 00.

I've learned that these are not a very reliable disk (cheap), but I have to question if the drive is at fault; I'm on my third NEC1300A as the first two were defective. I got free replacement on them, and now wonder about this one. Is it possible this is a media problem, or likely a burner problem? I've tried different files and different software, and get very similar results- sometimes sector 1559657, usually 1559658. Would you suspect media or burner?
    TIA

  2. If it's in the same sort of place on a multitude of discs, it could either be an unusual batch fault on the discs, or maybe a gearing problem on the recorder - maybe something is causing the sled to stick that moves the optical block.

Try writing a CD and see what happens - it won't be stepping the motor that drives the sled as accurately, but it should go some way as to proving whether or not the sled has full motion. Maybe there is some gunk in the gearing and that just needs to get shifted - for example, the manufacturer could have gone ape with the grease and its built up a nice, crusty layer on the worm gears and once its gone past that, you will be fine.

  3. As an update- I burned a CD with no problems, and then purchased Memorex 4X DVD-Rs and burned a DVD with no problem. I guess it was the DVDs were bad. I also pulled out a few bad disks I had from the past...guess what- Imation DVD+Rs! I think this burner doesn't like them or they are not very good disks... thanks for response.

  5. rharv,

The NEC burner has MANY, MANY problems. Return it and get a Pioneer or Sony. NEC has about the worst firmware out there!

I have heard lots of stories about the Sony's producing unstable burns. I have a memorex Dual X 1 and it works flawlessly.

  7. Really? I thought the rating area of this site put the 1300A as pretty good!
I've burned quite a few in a row without an error since changing from Imation+R to Memorex 4X DVD-R.
I sincerely believe it was the disks...
