I've just purchased a pack of CD 158} MEMOREX (48x) Branded 80 Min CDR in packs of 100
After reading some topics in this forum, i heard that alot of cds fail, has anyone been using this kinda cd, and whats the quality like?
Also i bought some pcline cds, which r basicly unkown, would it be wise to back up the cds with a decent make of cd? (The cds are already burnt and have around 100 of these, all with 700mg .avi on them)
Thanks For Ya Help![]()

I have cheep cdr that are still working. Some people are having problem's with old CDR's. I think it also has to do on how good your burn is read this link
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/shownotes/story/0,24330,3564809,00.html
CDR-RW and DVD-RW I think are better then regular CDR and DVD-R
Dye-based media
Russell in Showlow, Ariz., wants to know why CD-Rs and DVD-Rs use dye instead of some other substance.
The reason why Russell is concerned about dye-based media is because it's an unproven technology. Theoretically, a dye-based disc should last several decades, but it hasn't been proven in real time.
To answer your question, Russell, we'll ask you a question: What other substance should be used? Dye is an affordable and workable solution. Other substances may require substantial hardware modifications, such as a more powerful laser.
Dye media isn't going away in the near future. If you're concerned about its reliability, back up your archives and check the discs once or twice a year. -
They'll be useless simply because of the brand -- MEMOREX is GARBAGE.
Years ago, when I first had access to (didn't own one) a CD-R, I used Memorex CD-R's and I can't read 95% of the discs today. Since then, I've bought 1 box of 5 Memorex 80min CD-RW's, and I got through 4 bad ones (that wouldn't erase) before I gave up (and took that package back).
I'll NEVER buy Memorex ever again. They couldn't give them to me for free.
My 2 cents -
Again,,and again, and again, someone asks what is good media?
There is none!!!
No one KNOWS how long any disk will last. I have disks 6 years old that are still readable, and I have disks a year old that are not. I have "Name brands" that are not readable, and I have silver both sides, can't tell which side is up, disks, which are, 10 bucks a shrink pack.
Why in the hell would anyone believe the media makers when they tell you "their" garbage is good for a 100 years, when the real experts will tell you that they have a shelf life of 7 years, unburned, I mean they die after 7 years, if you don't touch them, but, burnt, they will last you 100 years, "or more".
Good god, what a f**kin' buncha dummies we are growing, to believe what the media makers tell us. You think they're gonna tell you "This media will be good for anywhere from 3 days to 100 years." . Jesus Christ, you expect some kind of truth in advertising?
Why do I, why does anyone else even bother talking to you? You either did not read any other post, or you have decided that those pipple are dummies. -
As long as you take good care no, but memorex is different, their standards have dropped in the dvd media arena not sure about cdrs never used them, but from what ive heard from friends there almost worse than generics and dont last, a friend bought a 50 spindle about 6 months ago and burnt around 10 all fine, today 6 of them dont play. For CDR/RW i stick with Samsung High Density Silver CDR (8x 80min) and Samsung Premium CDRW (4x 74min) ive had them for a while, and thewy still work great, i dont know about others but ive found they work for me. In todays market CDr is at a point that unlike dvdr nearly all brands are reliable.

i think you were the person having problems with memorex dvd-r media in another thread. if not please ignore this replay. if i am right your dvd-r memorex's media id is either CMC, or worse. they are known iffy media. memorex's dvd+r media now are ricoh, or better...known good media.
anyway read a article last week that identified (one reason anyway) why cds (regardless of brand) become unreadable...the adhesive of the labels people place on the cds.
i have probably 1000s of cds, content anything from movies to data to photos, quality cheap-as-sin to brand name, some from as far back as 1998...and a random sample testing of them produced ZERO unreadable discs. the cds are identified with a Sharpie marker, and no labels whatsoever. they are also stored in albums. maybe i'm just lucky. -
Noki, im not the guy in the other forums, i know the Memorex DVD dye switch from to CMC and thus have never purchased, theres a thread in this forum about labelling DVDR, some say Neato Foil Labels prevent the problem, ive never tried laels though. I used to use TDK's CDR's years ago, but switched, when i found a good deal on the Smasungs CDR's, b ought in bulk and am still using them!

thanks, elmotheteapot
what is the media id for the samsung media? are they + or -? 2x, 4x?thanks. -
Bump for Noki's question. Also can you let us know where you bought them please.
-
noki the samsung are cd-r's (sorry if i was misleading) for dvd i use HP DVD+RW 2.4x(Ricoh dye) and am about to buy some Datasafe RITEK G0# ill let you know how those go.

Same here....I call them MEMORSUX. Hated their cassettes years ago....hate the rest of their media today.

I think lots failed discs can be blamed on packet writing software. I had lots of cds that would only work on the drive that burned them and only if it had the same crappy ezcd software on it.

Memorex's CD-R's arent as much of a problem as their CD-RW's and all their DVD formats
-Yar, matey!- -
there's too many factors to go through to explain why certain discs go to shit after a certain period!
Burnable media doesn't take direct sunlight & heat too well, this can cause the dye on discs to fail. The top coating might deteriorate & cause the discs to fuk up. The burner may be old & on it's way out!
Your player may not read CD-R's too well, or a particular dye on a CD-R,
Or certain dye's mightent last as long as others.
Many different reasons -
I seem to recall some fuss over on CDFreaks site about cdr's failing in 1 to 3 yrs, instead of 7-25 (+)...
I have some here, Princo, that are 6yrs old and read fine, yet Kodak Golds are dead (same age or there abouts).
Maybe we need a sticky forum to report on known good cheapy and expensive cdr brands.
I'll start: Princo, Verbatim Datalife, are good. Mr Data and such like are crap.
<devils advocate here - but then someone else will say that Mr Data worked perfectly for him, and Verbatims died. Maybe a sticky is not such a good idea?>|
Meeow! -
memorex isn't all bad. I've used their DVD+R and had nothing but good results. it comes down to who really makes the disk. Memorex doesn't make their own stuff. the DVD+Rs I was using from them are Ricohs. you won't find better disks. their CD media may be made by cmc or something like that. thats what makes it so damn hard to find good media. the companies constantly change who makes the disks for them. I don't buy Verbatim anymore for this reason. I'll stick to my Ritek DVDs now.

1:How do you even FIND princos? They're not sold in stores....is there a way to do it besides the internet? And...
2: My DVD player isnt able to play ANYTHING I burn...except cheap compusa brand (with optodisc) dye. I tried sony (ricoh), all formats of the compusa type (optodisc), imation (cmc)....nothing! Anyone have this player, made by DMTECH?-Yar, matey!- -
