My mate maintains he cannot be traced on the internet as he connects from behind a router. I insist this is rubbish as a simple ping shows up his IP and ISP.
Can anyone offer any assistance in to helping me work this out ?

I am pretty sure he can still be traced without a problem. I know message boards and other websites can see your IP even if you do have a router.
He is probably thinking that just because he has a router that his IP is 192.168.1.1........the standard router IP, but its not. They can still see his real ip.
Hell I am sure Baldrick can see my IP right now even though I am behind a router. I would just let him know that it's not impossible to see his IP.
Even in games you can see the IP.........I was an admin in Counter-Strike for awhile and I was messing with my buddy who had a router. I could see his IP and ban his IP. I did that, but then ended up letting him back in........hehehe.
Hope this helps

My attempt at a way of explaining to him.
If he is behind say a company router then anyone needing to trace him would need to liaise with that company's network administrator to find out who the individual is.
If it is a small company with no dedicated network admin and no decent logs set up he could be harder to trace but the search is easily narrowed to the company and if it is a small company then that narrows things quite a bit.
If it is own personal router then he is easily tracked, his router IP might just as well be his PC IP !!
If he wants to remain anonymous he should perhaps subscribe to one of the anonymizer companies that provide an online proxy service. -

For $1000 USD, I will convince him its possible. But you have to sign a contract and neither one of us must ever talk about what happened to him.

Just tip Interpol that he's got some kiddy porn on his computer. Then he'll see just how traceable he is.
